Free, 6-week online SANE Sustainability Course
IAFN, in partnership with the National Sexual Violence Resource Center (NSVRC) is excited to announce that the application period will be open from June 18-June 28 for US-based SANE Program Managers to apply for a spot in our free, 6-week online course to address SANE Sustainability. The course will run August 12-September 20, 2013. Taught by nationally recognized experts, Jennifer Pierce-Weeks, RN, SANE-A, SANE-P and Jenifer Markowitz ND, RN, WHNP-BC, SANE-A, this course will provide education and skill building on issues of program sustainability, including budgeting, staffing, and collaboration, as well as ongoing technical assistance and capacity building to SANE Program Managers. Rape and molestation violence against women increases by 6 percent

The statistics can be read as either worrisome or hopeful; while there was a 6 percent increase in reported crimes against women in India - including rapes, kidnappings and dowry deaths - this can be indicative of more women willing to come forward to report these crimes.

ER nurses receive special training to aid sexual assault, abuse victims

A collaborative effort of several organizations and individuals enabled 20 nurses and three advocates from Raleigh, Fayette, Summers, Greenbrier, McDowell and Kanawha to attend a 40-hour training course for Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner - Adult. The training wound down with the SANE nurses taking turns testifying in a mock courtroom session. Afterward, Philip Morrison, director of the Prosecuting Attorney’s Institute, said he thinks each one is prepared to give testimony during an sexual assault/abuse trial.

Lawmakers for making DNA test mandatory in rape cases
The News International
Pakistan People’s Party’s Sharmila Faruqui moved the resolution on the issue that read: "This assembly resolves and recommends to the Sindh government to mandate the administration of DNA tests and preservation of DNA evidence in all rape cases in accordance with the judgement of the Supreme Court of Pakistan dated Oct. 2 2012, in case No. 2013 of SCMR 203 - Salman Akram Raja and another versus the Punjab government through the chief secretary and others. The Sindh government should also bear the cost of the DNA test in all such rape cases where the victim is not in a financial position to do so."

Increase in reports of abuse against children
Irish Times
Violence against children in homes where women have been abused has soared by 55 percent, it has emerged. Women's Aid revealed a growing number of youngsters are being targeted as their mothers are also being victimized by a partner. The charity heard 16,200 counts of physical, emotional, sexual and financial abuse of women in 2012, with 3,230 disclosing a child was targeted in the home, up from 2,076 in 2011.
