Hotel Management
As guests demand fresher food that has been sourced locally (not to mention organically), hotels across the country are creating gardens and small farms to grow herbs and vegetables, and to even keep bees for honey. Best of all, even urban hotels are putting their rooftops to use and growing some basics for the kitchens below.

But there are still areas of the country where vacancy rates continue to rise, leaving brokers and property managers with office spaces that, for a variety of reasons, just don't inspire renters.
Enter spec suites: ready-to-move-in offices that a growing number of owners are building out and brokers are marketing.

New Atlas
Amazon's high-tech, cashier-free convenience store has just opened to the public and predictably resulted in torrents of "store of the future" headlines. Unveiled a year later than initially announced, and reportedly at least five years in the making, it is clear this is an impressive state-of-the-art, tech-heavy retail experience, but is it really the future of shopping? Or is it just a very expensive publicity stunt?

"What do you want your building to sound like?"
It's not the question one might expect. To many, what their building looks like might seem more important than any sound it gives off.
In acoustic design, however, sound is everything. With more offices moving toward open plan layouts and growing numbers of residents living in multi-units close to noisy roads and entertainment venues, the importance of noise control should not be underestimated.

The United Nations estimates that by 2050 nearly 10 billion people will inhabit the planet, including 6.5 billion living in cities. That indictment comes from Matt Barnard, CEO of Plenty, an agriculture tech firm that is among a handful of companies operating "vertical farms." These indoor facilities rely on artificial light and aeroponic technology in a controlled environment in place of fresh air, soil, and pesticides to grow leafy greens.

We've all been to a themed restaurant; perhaps you've salivated over smoked beef brisket served by a gentleman resembling John Wayne, or you've tucked into moussaka beside a mural depicting Santorini on the Aegean Sea. There's certainly a place for these kinds of restaurants but as a modern hospitality designer, I tend to shy away. Good restaurant design, in my opinion, doesn't try to replicate the Wild West or a picturesque Greek island town — instead it evokes an emotional connection to the menu's origin.

When it comes to businesses, there aren't many that rely as heavily on first impressions as hotels do. Being an industry that prides itself on taking in a variety of accounts and world views, the design profession may not be openly hostile to minority designers but that doesn't mean macroaggressions don't exist within our bubble. As IIDA Executive Vice President and CEO Cheryl Durst stated in the diversity panel report, "We all know what it's like to be the 'only' in the room: designer, female, black, disabled, etc. Part of diversity is telling our stories, sharing our full selves."

After all, the very purpose of AI is to augment, improve, and ultimately replace human intelligence, which is still widely regarded, at least by us humans, as our key competitive advantage. There is no reason to believe that leadership will be spared the impact of AI.
