The push to make buildings more sustainable is nothing new, as the industry has largely embraced the growing trend. The U.S. Green Building Council's LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) certification system is the most well-known name in the space, as there are more than 59,000 LEED-certified projects totaling 6 billion square feet in 164 countries.
However, another trend related to sustainability is making waves in the industry: wellness. Although less definable than energy-efficient measures, wellness-minded design is growing in popularity as younger generations are pushing for healthier environments in their workplaces and homes.

An outbreak is like a wildfire; the sooner it's caught, the easier it is to fight, said Vips Halkjaer-Knudsen, a lab design expert at Sandia National Laboratories. To detect an outbreak early – whether Ebola, Zika, or influenza – healthcare workers must have a local, trustworthy diagnostic lab. For the past five years, Sandia's International Biological and Chemical Threat Reduction group has served as a trusted adviser for design of diagnostic labs around the world that are safe, secure, sustainable, specific, and flexible.

Totaljobs research has found that 35 percent of people aged over age 45 feel that employers’ provisions for people their age are "non-existent," and almost half believe that workplaces "naturally cater toward younger employees." With increasing pressure on the working-age population to support retirees, the new "office of the future" will help delay retirement by offering features such as health alerts, flexible working areas, and private medical rooms.

Sharing is everywhere. What might have seemed preposterous just a few short years ago – say, traveling in a stranger's private car to stay in a stranger's home – is now mainstream. A similar transition from "owned" to "shared" is underway within built environments, driven by the same factors of lower cost and user preference for customization, experience over ownership, and connection. As real estate costs have risen and profit margins shrunk, hoteliers were inspired to shift the allocation of space from individual rooms to common areas. Modeling strategies city planners use to design 24-hour neighborhoods, designers pioneered the trend of creating round-the-clock buzz by continually activating spaces such as lobbies, restaurants, and communal spaces.
