The mathematics of space optimization and office design

For any company, the notion of space optimization is a critical one. After all, there exists only so much physical space (e.g., square footage, wall area, floor area) within any interior. The trick to maximizing that space, of course, is a bit complex: You want to reduce the amount of space given to any one employee, but you don't want to risk losing the organizational culture. You also cannot afford to hurt productivity. This is where mathematics (and sometimes algorithms) can help play a part in space optimization when it comes to office design and layout.
