Work Design Magazine
Companies continue to focus a great deal of attention on building better office environments: open floor plans, formal and informal collaboration spaces, increased natural light, and even a bit of whimsy are all accepted design practices. And, like all of the other aspects of our lives, technology continues to be integrated into our workspace. The next generation of spaces will need to build on this focus on human performance with an increased awareness of the changes going on in the work experience – specifically communication, workforce inclusion, and a remote workforce.

For SB Architects president Scott Lee, luxury hotel design is about creating a sense of place. Destination hotels are no longer about kitschy design and tacky décor, but about creating a one-of-a-kind experience. Over the last 15 years, destination resorts have become overly themed and provide less of an authentic experience, Lee said. Calistoga Ranch and Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve are two examples of designs that blend well within their settings.

The departure of Thomas P. Campbell as director and chief executive officer of the Metropolitan Museum of Art comes as no surprise.
Trouble was already brewing when he took over. Cultural tides in America had turned, and the Met hadn’t turned with them. The audience for art, and for the traditional art museum, was changing. So the Met had to change, basically from a 19th-century analog museum to a 21st-century semi-digital institution. But nobody knew quite how.

Architect Harry Weese has succeeded in creating what remains one of the most beautiful subways in the world. Rectangular concrete coffers recall the grand vaulted ceiling at Washington’s Union Station, as well as many of the government’s neoclassical buildings, while also reducing the weight of the column-free stations’ vast vaults and providing a flat surface for acoustic panels. The hexagonal quarry tile floors, the stumpy wayfinding columns, and the Helvetica labels are always the same, and yet riding the Metro as an architectural experience is never boring.

In any commercial interiors project, flooring specification establishes the foundation upon which so much of successful design hinges. From wayfinding and safety to noise attenuation, branding, and aesthetics, there is hardly an element of an interior design program that is not either enhanced or hindered by the choice of flooring within a space. As such, the floor selection and installation process can often be the deciding factor between a beautiful, effective environment and a costly mistake.

We’ve admired Soviet bus stops, artsy bus stops, and just plain bonkers bus stops, but Singapore’s new experimental bus stop is on another level. The prototype structure was conceived with the mission to “make waiting fun.” And oh, how it delivers.

The Real Deal
Corner offices are a coveted piece of corporate real estate – but they probably shouldn’t be. According to newly published research from office design company Steelcase, corner offices meet only a small percentage of modern CEOs’ needs. Many leaders say they value teamwork over unilateral decision-making, yet still work in fixed spaces designed to isolate. Patricia Kammer, senior design researcher at Steelcase, says the corner office does a disservice for companies with flatter organizational structures where consensus trumps top-down commands.

Personalized learning doesn’t stop with content or ed tech devices in the classroom. The design of the classroom itself contributes to personalization. Some students learn better sitting in certain positions or grouped in certain ways. Teachers who pay attention and respond to this can offer more tailored instruction.

It’s a bit ironic that fitness centers tend not to have the greatest physique themselves. The predominant gym aesthetic is best described as utilitarian, even schlubby, replete with easy-to-scrub finishes, unflattering fluorescent lighting, and militaristic battalions of machines. Maybe, if you’re lucky, there’s a zingy colored accent wall.

The primary design element — the hero focal of South Korean retailer Shinsegae's toy store's storefront — is a transformative experience for kids, where they can enter the store called Toy Kingdom through kid-sized tunnels with interactive flooring setting the tone for an unforgettable and addictive store experience. Each key zone within the store has a supporting interactive element where kids can play and escape with the brand.

Health Facilities Management
Materials management is an underappreciated healthcare operation that either enables or undermines the organization's greater mission. The real opportunity to increase capacity and decrease cost is on the front line. Bulk material transport and storage may be done by a few people under the materials management umbrella, but this work is dwarfed by the countless hours of real point-of-use materials management done every day by nurses, doctors, and others across health systems.

Now, the fries aren't the only French thing on the menu.
A modern McDonald's concept has arrived in New York via Europe, and it's giving the Golden Arches a sexy polish. The restaurant is the first of its kind in the U.S. and features several new foods with a Parisian twist: croissants, chocolatines, and raspberry pastries.

I have walked countless trade show floors covered in the standard blue, red, black and even gray carpeting. In many cases, this carpeting extends into the exhibit booths in one of the chosen "show organizer approved" colors. Exhibit booth flooring is often referred to as the fifth wall and, surprisingly, it is often overlooked. The floor of your exhibit offers you another opportunity to showcase your brand message and aesthetic to the show attendees.
