There is a secret language to office furniture. The design, the size, the placement – they all communicate something. In most cases it's simply, "This work is sending me to sleep, please kill me." That situation seems unfair, given that modern jobs are often anything but boring. Yes, we have open floor plans, but does the environment reflect the creativity that exists in even the most mundane jobs?

At the Four Seasons, you come in after dinner, after the show, after the meeting, and your room light is dimmed, your drapes are drawn closed, your music is on classical, your turndown mat is on the floor, your slippers are placed. That’s an experience. To guests, it all appears effortless. Most seldom consider the ceaseless work it takes to maintain such opulent spaces, and this is by design.

The Hotel Lilla Roberts, a stylish 130-room property, has brought new energy to a landmark building whose previous tenants include a power station and the Helsinki Police Department. Built in the early 20th century in classic Finnish Art Nouveau style, the building’s design influence spans a century of Nordic design. Opened in August 2015, the hotel has a welcoming entrance with its distinctive Art Deco typeface. The lobby dazzles with its gleaming checkerboard floor and midcentury-style armchairs. And beside the reception desk stands a sculptural, look-at-me lamp – a giant black horse with a lampshade on its head.

The Dallas Morning News
Compared to what you'll see in the newest Dallas building designs, the 1980s must have been the dark ages of design. Dark granite, dark wood, dark glass – heavy-toned materials were all the rage 30 years ago when many of Dallas' landmark towers were built. Current redos of those grand old buildings are leaving the dark side behind with new lobbies clad in white marble, light polished wood, and acres and acres of clear glass.
