Wars over office temperature may be coming to a thaw. Thanks to advances in workplace architecture and new sensor and app technologies, individual workers are getting more control over the climate around them, which has long been a battleground for office workers. Some of the new technologies seem straight out of science fiction. One building under renovation in Italy is going to provide workers with their own “thermal bubbles” that can follow them around the building, so workers will each have their own climate-controlled zone.

The “bathroom bill” debate has raised some interesting questions for designers. If there was an easy way to make restrooms more functional, why not explore it? As Matt Nardella, architect at Moss Design in Chicago, notes, “We can design restrooms in such a way that people of all genders feel safe. There is a better way.” The biggest culprits are building codes that mandate sex-segregated restrooms, but some of those are being revised.

From the outside, Eva’s Phoenix – a new teen homeless shelter in downtown Toronto’s Fashion District – looks like a classic Art Deco brick warehouse. But inside, it’s organized like its own city, complete with a main street, townhouses, common “squares,” and more. The building is designed to reinforce the programming at Eva’s, a pioneering nonprofit that has been combating teen homelessness through housing, education, and job placement.

The library's symbolic role as temples of public education and freedom of thought is its real allure and the architecture of libraries often reflects that. Libaries often have dramatic reading rooms, ornate embellishments, and inspire a sense of awe. Cities and public institutions commissioned famous architects like Frank Lloyd Wright, Gordon Bunschaft, Louis Kahn, Harry Weese, Frank Gehry, and Rem Koolhaas – the same architects who design lavish houses, multi-million-dollar museums, and towering skyscrapers – to design their libraries. The key difference is that these designs were always intended for public use.

While the fundamentals of design might include forming and framing experiences, in 2017 they also include creating photoworthy moments. Design includes almost every element you see onboard your cruise ship, whether it's a photo in the stairwell, an interesting sculpture in the lobby or how food is presented on your plate at dinner. And most designers feel that the experience begins the moment you print your cruise ticket.

The challenge of what to do with abandoned airports is not uncommon. Denver is among many cities that have shuttered airports over the years. Cities around the world have found uses for old airport buildings: New York’s former Galeville Military Airfield, once buzzing with activity during World War II, is now a wildlife refuge. London’s Croydon Airport closed in 1959, but the original terminal building has since been repurposed as a museum and visitor center.

Supertall skyscrapers and glamorous museums can boost architects’ reputations or put a struggling industrial town back on the map, but as far as architecture is concerned, one type of building should never be overlooked: the theater. Today, the theater remains a crucial part of a city’s lifeblood, even as the types of performing arts have expanded. Modern theaters are technological marvels, pairing innovative architecture with state-of-the-art acoustics and video programming.

Research in biophilia – the notion that humans experience an instinctive bond with nature and other living things – as well as the effects of daylighting has greatly increased our understanding of and appreciation for the ways in which access to nature and nature views enhance the experience of occupants in built environments. The findings of this research now inform the architecture and design of most major healthcare facilities and many smaller ones.

There’s nothing quite like reading a good book with a drink in hand. That drink may be a mug of coffee, a cup of tea, a glass of smooth red wine, or a frothy pint. While cafés and bookstores often combine forces, bars are another story. However, there are a few notable spots across the country that serve up quality beverages next to a carefully curated book selection.

If you are in an influential position, you have probably said words to the effect of “My door is always open.” You likely meant this declaration very genuinely. You might well feel that you are a pretty approachable sort of person and that others feel comfortable coming to you with their issues and their ideas. This may be true. But it probably isn’t.

The employee experience is what makes or breaks retention. Simply put, if employees enjoy their work, they will stay.
However, this is no easy feat. The best way to improve the employee experience is by giving them a personalized experience. Employees don’t want to feel like just a number in the books. They want to feel special and have an employer who knows how they prefer to be treated.
