Officing Today
Workplace design expert, Kontor, released their first 2016 quarterly trends report. "We launched Kontor’s new Design Pulse, a recurring feature that highlights emerging global trends we are seeing on our site. In this first roundup, we''ve compiled various themes, designs, materials and more [that] are gaining in popularity on Kontor since the start of 2016." Flexible workspaces have evolved over the years and furniture (and also design) choice can greatly contribute in creating the right environment. Blake Zalcberg from OFM said, "Operators should focus on creating an environment that drives people to want to spend time in the office," and this means making sure that you're offering clients and members what they're looking for.

Many companies are starting to build a meditation practice into their culture – from starting out the day with a group meditation session to encouraging individual practices. Yet few companies have actually designed their workspaces around it. Enter Headspace, the makers of the popular meditation app of the same name. Its new 18,000-square-foot office in Santa Monica, California, is designed with meditation in mind.

Healthcare Design
Once plagued by concerns over healthcare reform, healthcare architecture, engineering, and construction (A/E/C) firms are taking a step out of the legislation’s shadow as the industry collectively moves forward, albeit cautiously. If anything, the Affordable Care Act is presenting new opportunities to collaborate with clients on built environment solutions to evolving care delivery models. While in past years, the industry reported being essentially in limbo until ACA aftershocks had run their course, this year, Healthcare Design’s 2016 A/E/C Survey registered a new swell of activity in its place.

Every day in shopping centers across Australia, disabled people face frustrations over access in retail outlets despite provisions in the National Construction Code and BCA that are supposed to prevent access issues. As architects, we have detailed knowledge of the standards and regulations relating to disabled access – factors like door clearances, heights of obstacles, fixtures in the path of travel, ramp gradients, and so on. Yet many find in their day-to-day experiences of life that the standards do not go far enough to provide access for everyone, whether they're in a wheelchair or even more commonly, using a pram or stroller with young children.

One of the first things visitors will notice is the bikes: A massive ramp leads cyclists directly into the building and the plate-glass windows in the lobby show off bike racks. The design is meant to encourage anyone coming to the building to get there on a bike instead of driving. "There are several trends pointing in that direction," says Anders Solaas, executive vice president for letting and development at Entra, the building's developer. It's one of several features that will make the future office building ultra-sustainable. When it's completed, Oslo Solar will produce more energy than it uses – and possibly more than any other building in Europe.

Located in the heart of Midtown just across from Grand Central Station, New York City, the Haworth showroom aims to be an equally iconic and majestic testament to design. The company's frequently refreshed space showcases the changing needs and styles of today’s workforce, as it aims to provide a welcoming and energizing atmosphere to stir and stimulate the interior design industry. On entering the space, guests are greeted with gourmet coffee and an array of Cappellini lounge settings. "Our philosophy is to make this all a little less intimidating. We want to make it warm and fuzzy for our clients," said Scott Lesizza, principal with WorkWell Partners. "We used to bring them into a conference room, close the door, they're on one side of the table and we're on the other, and it creates this tension. People are grappling with or anxious about the idea of changing an entire office, so we want everyone to relax a little bit."

Graduate design students at Iowa State University have created conceptual schemes for shelters that would house U.S. soldiers fighting in Afghanistan and help give them a sense of safety. The schemes were produced as part of a new studio called In Harm's Way, led by Lee Cagley, a professor and chair of the school's interior design department. Cagley asked students to conceive combat outposts, or COPs, for soldiers based in Afghanistan in the near future. The year proposed was 2022.

Health Facilities Management
As ambulatory care has flourished, the U.S. healthcare market has focused increasingly on efficiency and the patient experience. Health systems are building ambulatory care facilities throughout their communities, rather than just the main hospital campus – patient convenience and a healthcare organization's visibility in the community are now key factors in choosing ambulatory care sites. To make their facilities as efficient as possible, many healthcare organizations are following Lean methodology to maximize value and minimize inefficiency in design, construction and operations.

The New York Times
Airports have been drastically transformed since the 1970s, when you could smoke anywhere, stroll leisurely through security and hug your loved one at the gate before boarding the plane. Passing through security these days takes forever and sometimes borders on harassment. The lighting is brighter than a World Series night game. Almost all the chairs have armrests, preventing you from splaying out. And the ambient noise – the endless gate changes, the last calls for boarding, the CNN late-breaking news – makes it almost impossible to relax. It’s no wonder then that passengers often feel more like prisoners than clients.

In 2012, Family Health Center Inc.’s location had outgrown its existing facility, and with the impending patient increase anticipated from Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear's decision to expand Medicaid, FHC leadership determined it was time to improve and expand services, resulting in a relocation to the nearby Standard Sanitary Building. While an iconic structure, the building wasn't on the National Register of Historic Places or within a historic district, so there were no restrictions as to maintaining the original exterior appearance or other preservation guidelines. The design team was sensitive to the aesthetic nature of the building, though, and sought to retain the character as much as possible.

"'Meeting' has somehow become a dirty word; when we hear someone say 'I had a day full of meetings,' we feel pity rather than envy," Caroline Webb writes in her book "How to Have a Good Day." She's found that the reason why so many of us dread meetings is "that we often pay a lot of attention to what we're discussing – the document we're sharing, the decision we need to make, the message we want to get across – and very little attention to how we're having the conversation." Webb shares her steps to improving the way you plan and participate in meetings, so that "meeting" is no longer a bad word.

Research shows that in leaderless groups, leaders emerge by quickly synchronizing their brain waves with followers through high quality conversations. Simply put, synchrony is a neural process where the frequency and scale of brain waves of people become in sync. Verbal communication plays a large role in synchronization, especially between leaders and followers. Synchrony between leaders and followers leads to mutual understanding, cooperation, coordinated execution of tasks, and collective creativity.
