Steps to make Boston a model for development
The Boston Globe
Construction cranes crowd the sky and Olympic dreams (and worries) fill front pages as Boston pursues an unprecedented series of transformations. Often lost in the heated discussions of particular parcels is the bigger question of what kind of a city we want to be. The current boom is the perfect time to reconsider our planning and design process so that the benefits are shared as broadly as possible. Property owners, neighborhoods, government, and design professionals all need to work together if we want to leave a legacy of innovation for future generations.

We might spot patterns in office design, but a global picture is beyond us
Workplace Insight
The ongoing evolution in the design of the places we work has much in common with evolution in the natural world. But whereas natural selection is dependent on its "Blind Watchmaker" to shape creatures in response to the forces in their environment, workplace design is anything but blind — at least it is when done intelligently and with insight.
WELL buildings getting better
By Michael J. Berens
The release of the WELL Building Standard last fall has helped raise awareness of ongoing efforts to make buildings of all kinds healthier for occupants. Promoted as "the world's first building standard to focus on enhancing people's health and well-being through the built environment," WELL is a great step forward in setting health and wellness objectives for building design and construction. Others also are making strides to bring occupant health and wellness to the forefront of the building industry.

Raising the bar on MOB design
Healthcare Design
Lancaster, California, is located in the windy, high-desert region of Antelope Valley, a fact that made the design and construction of the new Kaiser Permanente Antelope Valley Medical Offices a challenging undertaking — especially in light of the balance that had to be struck between the area's extreme weather conditions and the provider's goal to ultimately create a LEED Platinum-certified facility that achieves net-zero energy use.
How Genentech fuses green building and energy science
GreenBiz
Genentech didn't set out to build just any old Silicon Valley open office when it undertook construction of a new, LEED Gold-certified corporate campus in South San Francisco, which sprawls over a quarter of a million square feet.
With some 10,000 employees housed on this campus, Genentech's corporate headquarters is also the largest biotech-manufacturing site in the world, according to CEO Ian Clark.

People join good companies but quit bad managers
By Greg L. Alston
I'm constantly amazed by how people who are charged with managing people try to make life much more complex and difficult than it needs to be. When people join a new company, they are usually excited by the new opportunities and believe in the vision of the organization. They choose the job based on the best fit with their world view. While the compensation plan is certainly one component of why people choose to work for you, it is rarely an element that determines whether they remain working for you.
