A Ping-pong table and W Hotel-style furnishings don't guarantee that an office is a meaningful space for employees. Office design crimes can take many forms – from too-bright lighting to squeezing employees into a too-small space. But mistakes can go deeper than furniture and carpet, even as firms devote money to upgrade their surroundings.

Work Design
Now that corporations are back on campus, they are looking for two things that were not available in the corporate campuses of the past. One is a new idea, the other is an older one. The new idea involves integrating new technologies with new workplace strategies. A new work setting provides the opportunity for a fresh start with office designs that help them accelerate the integration of technology. The older idea is quite simple. Recall the feeling you had while walking across your college campus quad – the knowledge that you stood in a historic place defined by the legacy of those who came before you and the sense of optimism about the future because of what you could contribute. That spirit and sense of belonging are the emerging ideas behind new campuses.

The need for intensive and intermediate care will increase, and hospitals must be developed to meet future needs. "The international trend is that the need for intermediate care in particular is increasing. More and more demanding methods are being used for treating patients, and the share of elderly patients is increasing," says Kari Saarinen, Project Manager of the EVICURES project and Chief Physician at ICU, Hospital District of South Ostrobothnia.
The EVICURES project developed a new design model on the basis of Seinäjoki Central Hospital's needs for intensive and intermediate care facilities using evidence-based design (EBD), which is built upon evidence, research results, or strong practical experience.

Quotidian Labs provides a collaborative workspace in the heart of New York's "Silicon Alley" for the companies under its umbrella. But after two years of making do with the bare essentials in the space (think stylish chairs and a mishmash of art), it was time to make the eighth floor office truly their own. With a dark and moody vibe, navies and shades of black dominate the space. Large, seemingly worn leather sofas sit on antique rugs. Phone booths are covered in a wallpaper that is cleverly printed with a pattern that looks exactly like distressed tin... as if you're stepping into a shady New York speakeasy.

Inside a cleverly-converted barn is a stack of timber beams that serve as a shelving system, seating area, library, and a staircase all in one. The renovated barn is tucked away in West Flanders, Belgium, where the old structure was converted into a contemporary office that marries modern design with rural architecture. Inside, large wooden beams are stacked to form a multi-functional structure, which forms a small mezzanine workspace with two decks. This central element references the structure's original purpose and can be used as a library, seating area, and a staircase.

Titled with practical appropriateness "wash coffee," a unique project that combines a laundromat and patisseries into a single interior, comes from the client – a French pastry connoisseur – who wanted to provide quality delicacies. Industrial materials (form works, piping) were paired with reclaimed items (freight container door, metal halide lamps). Finishes were removed from most walls, and mismatched furniture – including an OSB couch – helped evoke an understated homeyness.

As with many virtuosos, David Brenner, founder of the San Francisco-based living wall experts Habitat Horticulture, makes his creative process seem intuitive and effortless. "Like designing anything, it starts with parameters that help define the aesthetic," he says. But unlike the parameters of product design (dimensions, materials, and fabrication capabilities) or architecture (site conditions, budget, and permits), his parameters are often more ephemeral. Brenner's most recent project is a 4,400-square-foot living wall for the San Francisco Museum of Art, which is part of the art institution's three-year renovation.

"If your most interesting, well-traveled friend just visited Tokyo and Stockholm, what would he/she bring back?" This is the premise of travel brand Away's new concept store in New York. On one end of the store, visitors will enter through the "Stockholm" entrance and on the end other end, the "Tokyo" entrance. Geometric accents, wood vs. tiled furniture, and a dual-color painted floor distinguishes the two destinations within the store.

There are various evidence-based design strategies that produce the kinds of modern healthcare and aged-care facilities that communities expect today: strategies to improve mobility and accessibility, patient and visitor comfort, and occupants' health and satisfaction, as well as strategies that reduce risks of falls and injury, spread of infection, occupant stress or anxiety and noise. If we take the example of flooring products, there are a great many aspects to the product that will determine whether a certain product is a sustainable solution for a particular facility.

RollBottom is a mutable piece of furniture in which the roll-top of the desk also doubles as the seat of a chair. Now on view as a part of Chamber gallery's Progressland show, designer Ian Stell's desk is built on a steel framework that takes its typology from a roller coaster track. When the tambour is opened to expose the desk, it slides along the metal tracks and can be latched to the other end to form the seat of the chair.

What is it about uncomfortable moments that unleashes creativity? Is it something magical or mysterious? Hardly. Rhode Island School of Design's President Rosanne Somerson believes it is boredom, pure and simple – something all of us (and artists and designers in particular) need more of in our lives. When curious minds are given enough time, space, and freedom, the imagination has room to roam. We all harbor imagination, but most adults are trained to rein it in – so much so that it falls asleep. So we need to give it time and space to reawaken.
