Adding to the sizable body of research that shows the health benefits of standing desks – which keep workers more active during the day and relieve nagging problems like lower back pain – a new study has found that working upright also makes people more productive. And not just by a small margin. Research by the Texas A&M Health Science Center School of Public Health found that employees in a call center who used standing desks for a six-month period were 46 percent more productive than colleagues who used standard desks.

Healthcare Design
With lighting equipment accounting for a good portion of a project’s FF&E costs, budget frequently drives healthcare lighting programs. Like it or not, the documentation of the restaurant experience has become an integral part of eating out. And now savvy eateries have caught on, designing spaces and food to encourage social sharing. Changing trends in the way travelers work during a hotel stay is driving brands to rethink guestroom design and more are eliminating the traditional guestroom desk altogether. These brands' leaders see the traditional desk as unnecessary as more customers either want to work from the comfort of their bed or get stuff done while hanging out in the lobby. Take Hilton Worldwide. This past January, the company unveiled plans for its newest brand, the midscale Tru by Hilton. During the brand design process a desk was originally included in the room prototype, but it became quickly evident potential customers didn’t require or even want one.

In Tegucigalpa, Honduras, 56 percent of infants born needing medical intervention die due to a shortage of space to care for them in the city’s largest public hospital. With the help of six students taking a Cornell design studio this spring, however, there is hope babies born prematurely or with defects will soon be treated in an expanded neonatal intensive care unit at Escuela Hospital in the Honduran capital. Students in the Health & Healing Studio in the College of Human Ecology created three sets of designs for a new 4,200-square-foot wing on the hospital’s sixth floor. The addition will accommodate 20 premature infants and a clinic where mothers will learn how to take care of their infants after discharge.

Architectural design played a huge role in the redesign of Siam Piwat, a five-floor department store in Thailand. The space also takes the shopping experience to another level. The space takes on a futuristic edge, presenting visitors with unique displays that often incorporate technology. Rather than categorizing merchandise by brand, the experience is organized around the theme of "Lifestyle Laboratory." This includes 13 different set-ups that use objects like "beakers, flasks, and test-tubes, and diagrams of molecular structures, nucleotide DNA sequences, microscopes and amoeba, smoke, and bubbles."

"What do you think?"
Melissa Daimler, Twitter's head of the Global Learning & Organizational Development team, asks this question a lot. Daimler's team knows that when they come to her with a question, this is likely the question they'll be asked first. It's up to leaders in organizations to coach colleagues and employees through finding that answer. More often than not, when Daimler ask this question, her team has a better answer than she does — or one that she hadn't thought about before.

As companies become flatter with blurred boundaries, there is a greater push toward authentic leadership. As a result, a lot of unconventional leadership styles are emerging.
This is different than when large, bureaucratic organizations ruled and leadership styles were pretty conventional across the board. Today, we expect leadership at multiple levels. "It's no longer just about your emotional intelligence," says Deborah Ancona, director of the MIT Leadership Center. "It's about your ability to understand complexities, solve problems, and get things done" – no matter what leadership style that comes in.
