Crain's New York Business
A tenant that recently moved to Hudson Yards enjoyed all the amenities of a state-of-the-art office, including high ceilings, giant windows and an open layout that allowed more employees to work in less square footage and, in theory, better collaborate.
But something was off.
Using technology from an emerging field focused on optimizing offices for efficiency and productivity, the firm discovered its employees didn't have enough time to work privately on their tasks and were too often bumping into colleagues in common areas and conversing.
"They went to an open-layout design with their new office, but they found it had unintended consequences," said Gregg Carman, executive vice president and head of global commercial operations at Humanyze, which developed the software that analyzed the space and provided the data. "So they put in some new design features to promote the behavior they wanted and to achieve maximum productivity."

Everyone enjoys the services and amenities provided by a luxury hotel—but what if they were available to you at home?
That's the idea behind branded residences, homes which are usually located on the same site as a hotel, or even inside the hotel itself.
Branded residences are luxury residential developments offered for sale by hotel brands such as Marriott—the hotel operator with the largest slice of the market—and non-hotel brands like YOO, a company formed by designer Philippe Starck and international property entrepreneur John Hitchcox to develop design-focused homes with hotel-style services and amenities.
The residences offer buyers use of the hotel's facilities, or in YOO's case, provide similar facilities within a stand-alone development.

Earlier this year, Sabrina Alfin of San Francisco–based residential interior design studio Sabrina Alfin Interiors got out-shopped by a client. Her proposal for a project included a European-made light fixture that the aforementioned client went on to source on Google Images and purchase without telling her, for some $150 less than she could get it for her net trade price. Alfin was not pleased. As would be the case for any designer dealing with a customer going around or above their creative decisions and playing their role—or trying to.
It's an awkward situation, of course. Telling a client to back off isn't easy—and could backfire as far as possible leads and future collaborations go. Handling things graciously is also tricky. But, as Alfin learned, there are a few ways to protect your work.

A study from Captivate found that during the summer, workplace productivity goes down 20 percent. Additionally, attendance dips (by 19 percent), project turnaround times increase (by 13 percent), and people are more distracted, with 45 percent reporting they grapple with distractions. Needless to say, that's not good for business.
The good news is that as a leader, there are ways to keep yourself—and your employees—at maximum productivity throughout the dog days of summer. Here are six ways to start.

The job market, at least in some professions, has gotten very competitive. Workers in in-demand fields can afford to be picky. Even entry-level positions in retail have become harder to fill, as the number of job openings has exceeded the number of people looking for work.
That creates some major challenges for small-business owners. It can be hard not just to attract the people you need, but sometimes it's difficult to even bring in candidates.
To be competitive and land the people you need, it's important to remove pain points in the hiring process. That might mean making some small sacrifices, but it should make it easier to land the staff required to operate your business.

Employees often look forward to summer as the time to slow down and schedule some time away from work. For employers, however, the work must still get done, and summer's dip in productivity can create a challenge. Making the season work for both employee and employer can mean compromise and communication.
"Recruitment and retention start with knowing what employees want," says Michael Steinitz, senior executive director of Accountemps, a temporary accounting and financial staffing solution provider. "It's important to listen to learn what motivates them the most without sacrificing productivity. It's also important to know your market—especially what your competition is doing."
