Demand and expectations grow for green retirement communities
The New York Times
Though eco-conscious retirement communities are still rare in the United States (exact figures are scant), they are expected to grow in number as baby boomers age and seek healthier, greener alternatives. "Moving forward, in the next 20 years, these green communities will become the standard," says Andrew Carle, director of the senior housing administration program at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia.

Is designing for resiliency the new normal?
Healthcare Design
While world leaders gathered recently at the G-7 Summit in Germany discussed the impacts of climate change globally, Robin Guenther, a principal with Perkins+Will (New York office), is focusing on what it means to health care facilities in the United States. Recently, Guenther, who worked on New York's Building Resilience Task Force following Superstorm Sandy and is co-author of "Sustainable Healthcare, Architecture, Second Edition," authored a new health care report and toolkit as part of President Barack Obama's Climate Action Plan.

Designing for health: Programming beyond space needs
Contract
In its most basic understanding, the exercise of programming involves gathering and analyzing existing data, discussing client needs, and assessing facilities. The final product is a list of departments and space needs with criteria that meet code requirements. However, health care spaces are arguably the most complex of any building type because life is often in the hands of caregivers working within them.
Post-petroleum design and the future of sustainable materials
Curbed
Five billion; that's not a population statistic, that is the amount of plastic, in tons, that currently exists on this Earth, according to George Elvin, author of Post-Petroleum Design. According to Elvin, whose new book gathers case studies and stories of material science innovators, our dependence on the synthetic substance will wane as designers and architects invent new bio-plastics, engineer sustainable substances, or rediscover new ways to work with old materials.

Why post-occupancy review is the future of design (and how it can serve you now)
BuildingGreen
A Harvard researcher carrying a sample through a brand new high-performance lab hip-checks a button on the wall and hurriedly walks through a sliding door. Realizing she's forgotten something, the researcher abruptly turns around — and walks smack into the glass. Apparently this happens a lot.
The problem was the timing of the door, not the people using it, suggests Andrea Love, AIA, building science director at Payette and the architect who witnessed this scene of lab slapstick during a post-occupancy review.
Maybe you're thinking it isn't a designer's job to be on the spot to make that kind of adjustment. That is how the industry has worked for a long time. But you need to rethink that assumption, according to a growing movement of design professionals focused on ensuring that buildings in use actually achieve their design intent.

How to cultivate brand authenticity for your business
By Emma Fitzpatrick
Brand authenticity is a term you hear a lot, but not everyone knows how to define exactly what the term means. Typically, you know it when you see it — and when you don't. For example, Spirit Airlines was in the hot seat recently for automating their social media platform. Customers looking for that personal touch got bombarded with canned responses. Yikes. The airline completely missed the point of social media — genuine connections between consumers and authentic brands.
