Interior Design
Fans of Pinterest might be surprised to know that its new headquarters is not, in fact, replete with white walls and red accents in the shade of its P logo. The free website and app are popular for their inspiration boards, created by “pinning” images against a simple white background. But in the latest, and largest, of Pinterest’s four San Francisco offices, the predominant color is a sober dark gray. The approach of IwamotoScott, led by the husband-and-wife team of Lisa Iwamoto and Craig Scott, who had designed the tech company’s last headquarters, was to energize the space through interesting angles and views, emphasizing interior design’s subtler pleasures, with the help of Brereton as executive architect.

There are many reasons why direct-to-consumer brands — such as Warby Parker, Away, Glossier, Burrow, Allbirds, Quip, Bloomscape, and many more — are thriving in this day and age. Oftentimes there is a back story that resonates with how consumers feel and shop, whether it’s disrupting the status quo of legacy companies, wanting to provide more modern options, or filling a certain void in the market. Another reason is the price. DTC brands avoid retail markups and overhead costs, driving down the price of their products which is always a compelling reason to switch from a legacy brand to a start-up.

Tel Aviv has a new hotel in one of the trendiest areas of the city on Nahalat Binyamin Street. The 43-room Fabric Hotel was converted from a former sewing factory, with elements of its former life inspiring the new design.
Local hospitality design firm Oren Bronstein worked to combine a rugged, industrial vibe with a warm vintage feel. Breaking the barrier between old and new are the Belgian-styled, transparent glass and black metal front doors to the hotel. Outside, a hidden courtyard is surrounded by greenery and concrete walls. Meanwhile, the roof of the hotel features a hydroponic garden and surrounding views of the Tel Aviv landscape.

The Kings Square precinct of Perth, Australia is fixed right at the heart of the city, just beyond the nation’s western coast. Its central location makes it an apt setting for Market Grounds, a contemporary reimagining of Perth’s former market gardens. “We were designing within a very large concrete shell, so our strategy was to craft intimate and immersive moments within the space and the materiality guided this vision,” says Eva Sue, associate principal and lead designer for international architecture and design firm Woods Bagot. “This level of detail reflects the authenticity, originality, and quality of the project.”

A Lindsay Adelman chandelier dangling from an exposed ceiling crisscrossed with piping is an unexpected sight at a financial-services office. Particularly if that office is in Tysons, an up-and-coming town in the suburbs of Washington, D.C. But Capital One, a Fortune 500 banking company, has taken to heart the same lesson that tech and media firms have learned so well: When it comes to hiring and retaining the best and brightest, design really does matter.

Trust issues in the workplace are more common than most leaders realize. For example, the need to constantly get approval before acting; lack of risk-taking or decision-making; and unwillingness to share, ask questions or raise concerns are all signs of a lack of trust. Consequently, workplaces suffering from trust issues are not as productive, creative, or efficient as they could be. Here are three steps leaders can take to build trust.

By taking the time to ask others to share their perspective, you are demonstrating that their ideas matter. Too often we focus more on completion than we do on contribution and collaboration to create the best result. Sometimes when you ask others to share their thoughts, you will see their heads drop and they may be reluctant to offer their ideas. Recognize that people may not have had positive experiences with this type of interaction previously. It may take time for your team to come to believe that you are sincerely interested in what they have to say.
