Some 544,000 people in the United States have no shelter every night, according to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Homeless families make up over one-third of this total.
Beyond exposing them to weather, crime, and unsanitary conditions, homelessness can also damage people’s self-esteem, making them feel helpless or hopeless. Being homeless is a traumatic experience, in part because of the stigma associated with this situation. Research has long demonstrated that physical spaces affect human moods and behaviors.

Berlin-based Carmeq GmbH, part of the Volkswagen Group, needed an office update to allow the employees more flexibility with how and where they worked. Actincommon was hired to solve the problem and they gave them an open layout that housed both a place to work and a section to lounge. The new, light-filled workspace was designed to stimulate and increase creativity and is filled with a range of furniture that can be moved and configured into endless setups as needed. Working with a 10-feet-wide space, architects Philip Staszewski and Gabrielle Rousseau inserted curving, playful displays inspired by the company’s wares. The design of the additions led to a distinctive experience, despite it being a small shop.

Nike is launching a format that breaks new ground in using technology to provide a shopping experience that caters to local tastes.
The new concept, called Nike Live, is inspired by — and built as a hub for — local members of the company’s NikePlus loyalty program. The first one, Nike by Melrose, will open on July 12, on trendy Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles. It has pop-up vibes and a streamlined interior, and will operate as an experimental digital-meets-physical retail pilot. The products and services in the store are based on a deep understanding of the neighborhood, according to Nike. More neighborhood-specific locations will open in cities around the globe, including Tokyo, next spring and beyond.

A spirits company must have a spirited office. Global architecture and design firm Gensler delivered just that for Edrington’s space in New York, in a project led by principal and design director Jean Anderson. Nods to company history and culture permeate the office and the wares are front and center. “In our design, upon entering the space, the visitor is welcomed by a display of their products in a bar setting,” Anderson explains. There, the company can entertain, host tastings, and conduct bartender trainings.

Entrepreneur
Entrepreneurs and small-business owners rarely clock in and out during regular business hours. They work weekends, take late shifts, and do whatever it takes to get (and keep) their companies running smoothly.
Unfortunately, all that work can lead to poor work-life balance for those at the top. A survey by Sage Small Business found that small-business owners today work longer hours than they did in 2012. Owners are even sacrificing their own pay to work longer hours and keep their companies afloat.

Everyone’s success in your organization is predicated on how you include employees in the mission of the organization, and how you instill the mindset that their work makes a difference. This is important, as you hire new people in your organization that may be different than the majority of your employees in some way; culture, race, age, gender, etc. Hiring a visibly diverse workforce is not enough.
