For years now, Instagram has sat at the center of trends in food and beverages. Rainbow colored "unicorn foods" are often designed with Instagram in mind, and entrepreneurs responsible for popular treats like the galaxy donut and Sugar Factory milkshake often see lines around the block after images of their products go viral. Now some entrepreneurs are taking the idea a step further, designing their physical spaces in hopes of inspiring the maximum number of photos.

If you're out at a shopping center, you'll likely spot one of the more than 400 Sephora locations around the country. In fact, you can't miss them. They're sprawling storefronts, lined with rows and rows of shelves and filled with products from different brands for customers to test out. This format has worked well for the brand, which has been thriving in the midst of a major downturn in brick-and-mortar retail. But recently, Sephora announced it is tinkering with a new kind of store: An intimate boutique embedded in a neighborhood.

Office design is changing, and in doing so, reflects a desire for more social work environments, a movement toward flexible work hours and work spaces and a blending of home and office design. "One thing that I'm going to say is pretty true about the younger generation is the need for connection and face-to-face contact," Sara Remocker of Vancouver design firm DIALOG says. "If everyone works from home, you're losing that connection, so it's really important to design a workplace that still draws people in, where they want to come."

And in the next few months, New York City will see an influx of these, as established brands seek to open new properties and emerging ones get a foothold in the city.

Ever since Silicon Valley hires began playing ping-pong at work, the design of offices, hotels, and higher-education facilities have become increasingly home-like. Yet this long-running trend has not necessarily been holistic: The bathrooms in many of these spaces possess an institutional atmosphere that is far cry from the inviting kitchen or salvaged wood-lined collaboration zone on the other side of the wall.

The desk of the future knows you, perhaps all too well. It's a sit-or-stand desk, of course, outfitted with sensors that learn your habits and preferences through constant vigilance. When you've been sitting too long, a gentle vibration reminds you to stand. Your chair, also lined with sensors, tells the desk you stood up; the desk, which knows your height, adjusts accordingly.

Ditch those cheesy videos and embrace a new crop of high-tech training tools. In 2014, home decor retailer Garden Ridge spent more than $20 million to rebrand itself — a new logo, new store layouts, and a new name, At Home. But giving the 35-year-old Plano, Texas-based chain's staff a reboot was a challenge. "We had fairly jaded workers who'd been with the old regime," says Valerie Davisson, chief people officer of At Home, which was turning over the entire sales floor four times a year.
