Designing to fit the vision: Contemporary options — keeping an open mind
Ukiah Daily Journal
As you begin to consider an interior design project — commercial or residential — you would be wise to first explore the changed contemporary field as it now relates to your venue.
Though we all feel pretty sure we know what we like and want, those certainties might be based on limited, outdated information concerning what is actually available and possible — today. Keeping an open mind at the front end is added insurance that you will arrive at a more than satisfactory result — at the back end.

Sustainable building: Why wood is our most valuable resource
USGBC
In spite of all of its uses, wood is still a taboo material where building is concerned. Instead, we use concrete and steel in the hopes that our buildings (which are often our biggest investments) will remain strong and stable. While we prompt each other to “save the trees” and find ways to eliminate wood from our construction processes, others are using this resource to develop and maintain sustainable building practices that will help us all in the long run.

Financial Review
Since the advent of online shopping, bricks-and-mortar outlets have been called into question. Heavy outlays, rising rents, crippling staff costs, upkeep, and in many cases, declining sales have tipped accepted wisdoms out the window. New Yorker Peter Marino, the interior architect of choice for global brands such as Chanel and Louis Vuitton, told Style.com late last year that department stores were bearing the brunt of the change, stuck between the top-end luxury brands and the low-end high street chains.

Women giving birth in their 30s, and on into their 40s, is quickly becoming the new norm in the United States. With many factors at play, such as women simply waiting longer to settle down, as well as a medical environment that allows them to do so without sacrificing the possibility of having a family, experts say the patients walking into obstetrics units and birth centers today are quite different than those of decades ago —calling for designs that answer to an older, more sophisticated patient population.

Building Design + Construction

Think brick when it comes to interior design
The Daily Telegraph
Used with precision and refinement, raw brick was popular in mid-century modern interiors (Scandinavians and Americans particularly loved it) and painted white, it found favor in the 70s as a foil to all that wicker and kitsch.
Brick adds depth and patina to a clean, modern space and a touch of urban grit to a classic room. But it needs to be used sparingly and with respect.
