Decades in the making, the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture will open on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. on Sept. 24. Davis Brody Bond principal J. Max Bond received the commission in the late 1990s and helped devise the museum’s Master Facility Planning and Program Study. African materials feature in the seven-story atrium, with accents of Kenya black marble and bronze trim above terrazzo flooring; the marble reappears in the below-grade Contemplative Court, featuring Bendheim architectural glass with a laminated metal mesh core with perforated metal ceiling tiles.

If you look at the development of ergonomics in the last one-and-a-half decades, we are seeing a significant shift. Ergonomics, 10 years ago, was more about design for static postures – sitting in an office, at a workspace, or at a desk. The whole idea was to develop a product that would make you feel comfortable while you were sitting. But the attitude towards a sedentary lifestyle has changed dramatically. We now know that people should not be sitting in office the whole day and not moving.

Modern designers love the prospect of an open plan. Whether in the home or in the office, pulling down the walls and creating these communal, flowing spaces is being adopted everywhere. Admittedly, open plan spaces can look fantastic, with the whitewashed walls reflecting the light flowing through. However, it is the practicality of an area such as this where problems begin to arise. Sound is hardly an issue at home where there are arguably two, three, or even four individuals. But place 20 employees or more into a fairly cramped space and then see what the noise levels are like.

Healthcare Design
As healthcare continues to move toward being a consumer-based service, focus has appropriately been placed on the experience and satisfaction of patients and families. But what about the staff? Who is caring for the caregivers? Can healthcare incorporate that same thinking into work rooms and stations?

Once upon a time, cutting-edge office spaces consisted of restrictive cubicle walls that hindered communication. Since then, the trends of workplace design have veered from one extreme to another: Designers have been creating open plan workplaces, many with acoustic problems and a debilitating lack of privacy. Design firms and manufacturers are now attempting to scale back, searching for a happy medium that allows for both spirited collaboration and private reflection.

Stairs are a necessity in buildings; they provide a path from one level to another level under normal conditions and an exit path under emergency conditions. But with advances in passenger lift technology, disability rights movements, and building code refinements, stairs in larger buildings have now generally been relegated to a secondary path or for emergency use only. But in smaller buildings without passenger lifts, and in residences, stairs remain the sole form of movement between levels of a building.

Instead of expecting employees to adjust to a company's culture, the culture now revolves around what keeps workers productive and creative. Designers should take everything into account when working to design an effective workspace. What's blocking natural light? How dark is the office furniture? How tall are cubicle walls? Are comfortable seating areas available to employees? Are there beautiful plants and art pieces? "It's easy to put offices around the perimeter and work spaces in the middle. Maybe ask if you should rethink that a little," says Tami Shulsen, design director for Midwest Commercial Interiors.

In 2014, a plaster rosette fell from the 52-foot ceiling of the New York Public Library's grand Rose Main Reading Room. The library was already closed, but the accident prompted the largest renovation of the library's ceiling in its over 100 year history, a renovation that is nearly complete. Two years and $12 million later, the renovation – which included reinforcing all 180 rosettes, removing asbestos dust, and recreating a mural in the adjacent catalog room – is complete.

We live in an era of Trump and ISIS. Meanwhile, one of today's most popular colors is called "Serenity." Think of the dusty pinks and faded blues in ads for popular products like the underwear brand Thinx, or the makeup company Glossier.
