Every classroom in the new Blue School has its own, brightly-colored stage—or at least, you’d think they were stages. The nomenclature varies depending on whom you ask: architect David Rockwell calls them “urban porches” while Ashley Hughes, the school’s director of operations, simply refers to them as “niches.” In any case, these variegated platforms are simple but adaptable classroom elements: They can be used for group work, presentations, or quiet individual reading.

Within restaurant interiors, hard surfaces like wood, concrete, steel, and brick are often remediated by soft, porous materials that absorb sound waves frantically bouncing off everything. Stephen Blake, architectural and contract territory manager with Armstrong World Industries, which provides consultations and products for noise control in commercial spaces and homes, said that sound-absorbing tiles and “blades” (or panels) help to absorb these sound waves and prevent them from bouncing around. Many sound abatement companies offer products like sound blades made with a fiberglass or mineral fiber core as the main absorption material.

In the 1960’s, the Defence Colony neighborhood, or DefCol in New Delhi parlance, was where retired members of the Indian Armed Forces resided. Today, it’s a commercial hot spot lined with retail stores and restaurants. One of the area’s new low-rises is home to an office with an American backstory, but it’s by homegrown firm Studio Bipolar. The Indian outpost of Esquire, the New York-based men’s media brand, was built to house employees of an upcoming Esquire-themed nightclub nearby. “The client saw the office as an ambassador for the club,” Studio Bipolar co-founder Sanjana Mathur says. “He envisioned potential partners walking in and immediately understanding what they were investing in.”

Yabu Pushelberg has announced plans to develop a new rooftop bar and lounge concept to crown the Peninsula Chicago. Z Bar will be an elevated space evocative of a private social club with an offbeat sensibility.
Rough and refined textures will juxtapose graphic patterns and artistic flora- and fauna details, including a custom verdant mural and framed animal portraits that will greet visitors upon arrival. Floor-to-ceiling windows create an indoor-outdoor connection. Lounge areas will be adorned with open-grain oak-paneled walls that offset the curvilinear, residentially inspired furniture, which is upholstered in soft neutral and rich tones.

Set in the historic university town of Göttingen, Germany, it would have been a no-brainer for a hotelier like Georg Rosentreter to direct his design team to study up on academic inspiration and then close the book on any further aesthetic investigation. But that kind of too-literal thinking wouldn’t have earned a passing grade from Rosentreter or Freigeist Lifestyle Hotels cofounder Carl Graf von Hardenberg. Instead, Rosentreter worked with designer and artist Frank Kassner to craft an 118-room property in the heart of the city that mixes Nordic and Asian elements with Jean-Michel Basquiat-inspired art to bend and blend cultural cues and redefine what it means to be local.

When you schedule a meeting for 11 a.m., are you on time? You should be. A leader who leads with integrity takes their commitments seriously and understands that setting a good example is important for overall team unity. They know that their time is no more valuable than that of their vendors or staff members. Your behaviors are small examples to your team, and no example is more obvious about your integrity muscles than being on time, all the time.

Whenever a CEO or someone in a leadership position makes a public statement in support of diversity, equity, and inclusion, people who agree get excited. It’s always affirming, inspiring, and uplifting for employees and consumers who feel the same way. But ultimately, the test and the business results are in the actions. A real inclusive leader knows how to support employees that may be different than the majority.
