MBH Architects completes Jason Mraz Music Studio for ARTS

MBH Architects, in partnership with the Good Tidings Foundation, recently completed the Jason Mraz Music Studio for ARTS (A Reason to Survive), a non-profit that supports youth development through creativity and the arts. Located within the existing ARTS Center in National City, California, the newly-renovated, 1,000-square-foot music studio will continue to serve local aspiring musicians ranging from ages eight to 24.

Los Angeles has Beverly Hills. Manhattan has Fifth Avenue. In Tokyo, the luxury shopping neighborhood is Ginza. It’s there, amid upscale style and super sophistication, inside a Ginza mall, that the office of NewsPicks, a news media platform, is located. Recently, NewsPicks has launched an educational venture called NewSchool, which enables people to come in and learn more about an industry from classes with and talks by successful CEOs and CMOs from such companies as ASICS, Slack, and DeNA.

On Valerie Schweitzer’s front lawn in Water Mill, New York, a structure of intersecting cylinders, thrust aloft on posts and partly enclosed by vertical cedar boards, reaches for the sky. Is it a building? A sculpture? An apparatus for play? Ms. Schweitzer’s ethereal pavilion is all of those things and something more—a physical manifestation of her architectural dreams.

In May, designer Adam Nathaniel Furman participated in a talk in which he lamented the rigidity of design education, arguing that it “brainwashes” students into believing that monochromatic minimalism is the epitome of good taste. He pointed instead to a handful of designers working in London—Yinka Ilori, Camille Walala, and Morag Myerscough among them—who he said reject this attitude, instead embracing color, pattern, and ornamentation. He dubbed the results “New London Fabulous.”
