Metropolis
Whether it's a rectilinear grid of acoustic ceiling tile or fashionably exposed joists and ductwork, to many architects the ceiling is often a strictly utilitarian affair. Still, there’s no reason why a concern with function should keep the "sixth surface" from being beautiful. Indeed, some architects and designers are now looking for ways to incorporate the ceiling into their overall designs while encouraging inhabitants to look up and find shape, movement, color, and texture.

Sounds, particularly those made by other humans, rank as the No. 1 distraction in the workplace. According to workplace design expert Alan Hedge at Cornell, 74 percent of workers say they face "many" instances of disturbances and distractions from noise. "In general, if it's coming from another person, it's much more disturbing than when it's coming from a machine," he says, because, as social beings, humans are attuned to man-made sounds. The popularity of open offices has exacerbated the problem. The University of California's Center for the Built Environment has a study showing workers are happier when they are in enclosed offices and less likely to take sick days.

Global design firm Frog set out to build an office that answered the question: How do you design for open collaboration as well as NDA-enforced privacy? To accomplish that, their office was designed to incorporate three different areas: public, semi-permeable, and completely lock-and-key private.

Los Angeles International Airport officials and their design partners have put the L.A. back into LAX with the unveiling Oct. 19 of the massive renovation of Terminal 6. To mimic a trip from downtown L.A. to the beach, the terminal’s design details shift from industrial grays to blue-sky brights. After passengers clear the T6 TSA airport security checkpoint, they’ll see concrete walls, a column covered in a mosaic of graffiti-painted tiles and industrial metal finishes. This DTLA has a Starbucks, a See’s Candies, and a newsstand branded under the banner of San Francisco-based Sunset magazine.

Design: Retail
Although giving retail space a refresh is common practice among bricks-and-mortar shops, a few retailers are taking that concept to a whole new level by completely transforming their interior design on a regular basis (à la STORY in New York, whose retail space uses the constant reinvention of its interior to reflect trends, themes, and social issues). Whether seasonal or monthly, this consistent design overhaul is giving customers something to look forward to and retail a changing face.

Since it opened in 1972, Le Mérdien Etoile has been considered the largest hotel in Paris and the crown jewel of the hotel group’s over 100 properties. Throughout the hotel one finds mid-century modern parallels to the heyday of Air France, including their contribution in creating the Concorde, reflected in the light fixture hanging above each bed. “We wanted the allusion to be there but yet still be subtle,” Frank said of her design process behind this single fixture depicting the silhouette of the aircraft which took several months to master.

Before Evan Sharp cofounded Pinterest in 2010, he was an architecture student at Columbia University. So in 2014, when it came time to build a new headquarters for the growing company of about 400 employees, the choice of an architect had a special weight. Eschewing clichés like ping-pong tables, themed rooms, and slides, Sharp had something else in mind – a sophisticated, thoughtful rethinking of the typical tech office, informed by their shared background in architecture.

We're going through the biggest change in human history since the birth of mass agriculture and it's causing huge changes in the design business just like every other. About a decade ago, Alexa, the CEO of a big-city firm with about 100 employees, designed a line of products so successful that the firm was featured on magazine covers. Those framed covers hang in the firm's lobby, but at this point, they're gathering at least figurative dust. "Our concern is keeping a steady flow of work in spite of the boom-and-bust cycle," Alexa said. Past successes can trap you. Clients and potential clients want to know what you can do for them now.

Leadership and management are two different animals. Management is about coping with complexity, managing people and tasks, whereas leadership is about coping with change and ensuring the team takes collective action towards achieving common goals. The most successful leaders adapt easily to changing environments and use the right approach for the right situation. Poor leaders do the opposite and fail to make appropriate adjustments in dynamic situations resulting in disarray and confusion.
