Interior designers foresee softer demand at year's end
By Michael J. Berens
Continuing the upward trend that began toward the end of the second quarter, interior design activity rebounded to close to 2019 levels in the third quarter. Billings were up nearly twice what they had been in the spring, with demand for residential remodeling and design services leading the way. As the quarter came to a close, though, firms experienced a slowdown in new inquiries and committed projects, a signal that business may taper off slightly in the final months of the year.

See inside one of the world's most beautiful bookstores
Fast Company
The bookstore, designed by architecture firm X+Living, takes inspiration from the natural world with sweeping, curved bookshelves, staircases, and epically tall, arched doorways. The effects of these features are multiplied by expansive, mirrored ceilings that will make you feel like you’ve stepped through the looking glass. For architect Li Xiang, who Fast Company recognized as one of 2020’s Most Creative People, that’s the point.

Gow Hastings Architects creates contemporary student hub for Niagara College in Canada
Interior Design
Tucked away in a rural community in Ontario's escarpment sits Niagara College, a school focused on applied arts and technology. But the college's 1970s-era Welland Campus did not quite reflect its culture of innovation, so Gow Hastings Architects stepped in to create a contemporary student hub (the firm earned an SBID International Design Award for Best Public Space for the project earlier this month). The new two-story, 35,000-square-foot Student Commons, which reflects the creative prowess of the college's students, features additional classrooms, a welcome center, food court, retail space, student activity room, and plenty of nooks for quiet study or team collaborations. The building also includes a new, north-facing entrance and floor-to-ceiling glass walls coated with glazing, enabling natural light to flood in.

The rules of startup success, according to Daymond John
Inc.
Despite his success investing in hundreds of startups as an investor on Shark Tank, as well as his experience building FUBU into a clothing brand that has grossed more than $6 billion, Daymond John is very honest about his limitations. "I can't help every business. If that were the case, FUBU would be Nike," John told the virtual audience at the Inc. 5000 Vision Conference Wednesday.

10 questions with ... production designer Alexandra Schaller
Interior Designer
For Alexandra Schaller, the theater is a second home. The production designer—who recently worked on Apple TV+'s series "Little Voice," which premiered over the summer—grew up immersed in the stage as well as the worlds of art and design. "My earliest memories are of going to the theater with [my dad] and I just remember being so wowed by feeling like I was always part of the performance," she says, explaining that her father worked behind the scenes on such productions in a role not far removed from her own.

How to identify - and fix - pay inequality at your company
Harvard Business Review
Pay equity has been a hot topic over the last few years, fueled by national social movements, including #BlackLivesMatter and #MeToo. California recently passed a law requiring employers to file equal pay reports annually, starting in March 2021. Colorado and a dozen other states have either passed or are considering a variety of pay transparency bills. And there are “no signs of it slowing down,” says Tom McMullen, who leads the global rewards and pay equity practice at Korn Ferry.

How to brace yourself for disappointment
Harvard Business Review
Writes Amy Gallo: "One of my main coping mechanisms during these times of uncertainty is thinking through the potential disappointment. I know I’m not alone. 2020 has been a year of disappointments — often serious and grave ones — for so many people, from job losses to school closures to illness and death. And there are likely more disappointments on the way. There are the leaders who are anticipating the possibility of more layoffs, the small business owners who aren’t sure if they can survive another mandated closure, and the parents who aren’t sure how they will perform their jobs if schools can’t remain open."
