The Modernist, a hotel recently opened in Thessaloniki, Greece, strikes the perfect balance between contemporary hospitality design and old-world, heritage architecture. Set in a 1920s building that was restored by the city following a great fire, the space was converted into a 40-room boutique hotel by FORMrelated Studio in a total redesign with “a minimalist yet sensual style that pays attention to detail and moves between art deco, mid-century detailing, and Danish design.”

Located within the Shanghai World Financial Center, a new shop for the Japanese company JINS Eyewear, designed by Tokyo-based architect Junya Ishigami, has neither street frontage nor facade. It doesn’t even have a front door. Instead, the entrance opens completely to the building’s internal mall, with shutters for nighttime security. In effect, the public corridor serves as the shop’s circulation, since customers must exit into it to move between the counters—thick slabs of concrete that appear to float effortlessly above the floor.

Alexander &CO has recently completed Stanton&Co, a restaurant interior fit out of an existing heritage shell. The venue is designed for 250 patrons and features a fine bar/bistro offering internal and external dining with an open show kitchen.
The project explored various timber paneling, joinery, and metal structures, including the oversized zinc kitchen "hood" which shields the view of the dropped kitchen ceiling required to achieve food compliance. A study of traditional details and heritage paneling, the tone is warm, expressive, and refined within a robust and exposed outer structure.

The workplace TPG Architecture recently devised for the New York branch of the Bermuda-based insurance provider Argo Group is airy and modular, with an emphasis on collaborative areas.
The new space joins two floors of what once were 19th-century warehouses near the Hudson River and features a terrace with views of the High Line, plus a new penthouse, bringing the total square footage to an audacious 45,800 square feet. “It’s a bold move,” TPG’s managing executive Michel Fiechter says of the sprawling digs for 200 employees, relocated from a much smaller warren downtown.

The moment you walk into the newest U.S. outpost of fast-casual chicken chain Nando’s, becomes clear you are in a different sort of fast-food joint. The South Africa-headquartered restaurant chain, known for its zesty peri-peri Portuguese-style chicken cheeky late night dinners, has taken a turn towards the high-end in its ongoing expansion across the pond. The design team’s exercise translated into a space that is awash with glazed tiles, South African-inspired textiles, and a rhythmic screen woven with industrial chord to shield restaurant guests from the sun blazing through the floor-to-ceiling windows.

Do your employees even know your name? Do they even know why your organization exists? If the answer to one or both of these questions is "no," you cannot possibly have an inclusive culture in your organization. And if that's the case, you’re not leveraging the skills, talents, and experience of everyone in your workforce. Three revealing interactions with employees in the last month caused me to ask these questions.
