The Huffington Post
The 'third space' relates to an in-between space that isn't the home or the office, but a café or library for instance, or a co-working office space. "The concept of choice has been restricted to within the workplace and what we're seeing now is a move beyond the bounds of the walls of a building," Emma Davenport, head of Brand and Culture at Davenport Campbell told The Huffington Post Australia. "Organizations need to have policies that support this level of choice which requires a complete re-think on outcomes and productivity," Davenport said.

When Ticketmaster opened their London office, they sparked a flurry of interest with the introduction of an indoor slide for employees. For some, this represented an exciting and different way to inject a bit of fun and creativity into the office environment. For others, it was a gimmick too far. As the debate raged across the internet, one thing became clear: With many people spending in excess of 40 hours a week in the office, the need for dynamic, well-designed workspaces which engage employees and encourage collaborative working is paramount.

Reebok has chosen a new home for its Boston headquarters in the Seaport’s Innovation and Design Building, which will house 700 employees and contain a FitHub store, CrossFit gym and mile-long track. “We have a goal of being the fittest, healthiest workplace in the country, and this new location will go a long way in helping us achieve this goal,” Reebok President Matt O’Toole said in a statement. The space will contain a 30,000-square-foot gym including a CrossFit box and boxing ring, and Reebok plans to create a mile-long running track around the facility for public use. It will also have an 8,000-square-foot FitHub retail store and a farm-to-table cafe open to the public.

Becker's Hospital Review
With their dreary corridors, impersonal rooms, and chemical odors, hospitals often evoke powerful sensations of discomfort and anxiety among patients and visitors. However, the transformation of one hospital, driven by design thinking, shows that with a little creativity, hospitals can be comfortable, welcoming places, according to a case study in the Harvard Business Review. Using design thinking and principles and supported by external designers, the leaders of Rotterdam Eye Hospital in The Netherlands transformed the facility from a dismal, typical looking hospital to a bright and comforting place. Since its renovation, a process that spanned 10 years, the hospital has won a number of safety, quality, and design awards, and its patient intake has increased 47 percent, according to the report.

Interior Design
Trained as a cabinetmaker, architect Arne Vodder intuitively gravitated toward wood in his furniture designs. He unveiled his first effort in metal, the AV chaise longue in steel with supple leather, at a Copenhagen furniture fair in 1972. Now Erik Jørgensen, a manufacturer known for its reproductions, joins forces with the late designer’s family to remake the original. Vodder once proclaimed, “Design should be organic, aesthetic, and beautifully executed.” Consider it done.

Crain's New York
Startup insurer Oscar has opened its first members clinic, in downtown Brooklyn, in collaboration with Mount Sinai. The fourth-floor, 6,000-square-foot office includes five exam rooms, three consultation rooms, and a multipurpose room, where Oscar plans to offer classes in yoga and nutrition and specialized programs for diabetics and expectant mothers. Patients are met by a greeter when they walk into the practice, and they sign in with an iPad. They don't have to fill out their insurance information and medical history on a clipboard because all that information is already stored in the system. Dr. Harry Ritter, Oscar's vice president of care delivery, said the practice is designed to avoid the typical barriers that other practices put between staff and patients.

Among the most encouraging qualities of the design by SO-IL and BCJ is its elusiveness, its ability to shrug off or slip past easy readings. The canopy, with a large opening or oculus in the center, is a case in point: An unusual combination of exuberance and modesty, it’s an architectural gesture that extends the museum’s reach and shrouds the building at the same time. From the air the canopy’s crosshatched design is an abstraction of the gridded farmland that lies on the far side of the train tracks and freeway. At ground level it draws the museum’s three interior wings – each with a different height – into a loose embrace, one suggesting (in the manner of 1980s projects by Charles Moore or Frank Gehry) a small village as much as a single building.

Health Facilities Management
Trying to design and build a new hospital, ambulatory care center, or facility of any type that meets present and future healthcare delivery needs is a tall order. Technology and medical care evolve so quickly now that today’s state-of-the-art risks become yesterday’s news. It’s a challenge to anticipate the changes, designers admit. That’s where innovation and creativity enter the picture. While they acknowledge what they are up against, the same designers and builders who are witness to the endless challenges also see opportunity.

Edson Leader
The Edson Healthcare Center doesn’t feel like a hospital when one steps foot inside its doors, that’s because healthcare design is changing. Natural light is one of the main features of the building. A two-story glass wall is prominently displayed along the main hall which offers a view of the outside courtyard and gardens. Floor-to-ceiling glazing at the end of each hallway, and picture windows in each patient room also provide plentiful daylight views of the outdoors.

Some leadership situations call for dominance, whereas others call for prestige. Being maximally effective as a leader means being able to diagnose the situation and adopt the leadership approach that works best. Switching back and forth between the two approaches depends on the task at hand and one’s organizational culture.

Fast Company
For nearly two decades, the leadership team of Steelcase, the office furniture manufacturer, was located on one of the top floors of the global corporate headquarters in Grand Rapids, Michigan, overlooking the prairie surrounding its campus. In 2014, after Jim Keane was promoted from COO to CEO, he decided to move the leadership team across campus to what the company calls the Learning and Innovation Center, the main crossroads through which employees frequently pass. The new office space on the ground floor is now buzzing with interactions between leaders, employee teams and customers throughout the day.
