From March 2: Hospitals are among the most expensive facilities to build, with complex infrastructures, technologies, regulations, and safety codes. But evidence suggests we’ve been building them all wrong – and that the deficiencies aren’t simply unaesthetic or inconvenient. All those design flaws may be killing us.

From June 1: Thanks to an array of studies and surveys, we know design really does have a profound effect on our state of mind. When professionals on LinkedIn responded to a CanvasPop survey, an impressive 77 percent claimed art makes them feel happier, 74 percent said it inspired them, and 27 percent indicated pleasing décor improved their productivity. So let’s get more specific. What kinds of design trends are millennials bringing to the table?

From March 16: While humanity in general may be endlessly enamored of man's best friend, bosses frequently disagree. From fears of litigious allergy sufferers to costly personal injury claims to animal-hating landlords, there are plenty of reasons company leaders might be skeptical of joining the dog-friendly office trend. But new research from Central Michigan University offers a rationale for dog-friendly offices that you just might be able to sell to your wary boss.

From April 20: Last year, a news story was released about the discovery of the world’s ugliest color, Pantone 448C, which was used by the Australian government on tobacco packaging to discourage smoking. This, and many other strategies are the result of the increasing amount of insight in recent years on color theory, which surrounds the meanings, effects, and use of color. One of the primary items in the designer’s toolkit, the discussion around color is one that is always evolving. As we’ve entered this era of heightened focus on workplace design, color is now also a major consideration of psychologists and major businesses and organizations.

Interior Design
From Aug. 3: A truly global network, the International Interior Design Association has 15,000 members representing 58 countries. But its nerve center has long been linked with a Chicago landmark, the Mart. As explained by executive vice president and CEO Cheryl Durst, an Interior Design Hall of Fame member, "We've had presence there since the 1960's." That's decades' worth of inertia, discouraging the IIDA from leaving the Windy City's foremost design hive. Still, with the most recent lease about to expire, the association deliberated whether to move its headquarters to another space in the ginormous building or to venture outside it.

From June 15: Google wants to build a sprawling 330-metre-long "landscraper" with a rooftop covered in wildflowers and woodland plants for its London headquarters. Designs unveiled last week show the glass and concrete building would be 11 stories with sloping gardens surrounded by trees and a track for "walking meetings" as the top level.

From Feb. 9: For years we've seen the technology industry and coworking entities shape the design of the workplace. Today, professional services firms – law, finance, tax, and accounting – are also transforming their workplaces and organizational cultures to operate more like their progressive counterparts. These traditional companies are finding value in adopting a transformative approach to office design. Law firms, in particular, are adapting the design of their spaces to adjust to new trends in the profession.

Wired
From May 11: The Obama Presidential Center continues the tradition of presidential libraries reflecting their namesakes’ personalities and narratives. The three-building complex, in Jackson Park on Chicago’s South Side, clearly reflects Barack Obama’s proclivities and priorities as the nation’s 44th president. The design, by the New York firm Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects, looks more like a park than a library of the sort associated with, say, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, or George H.W. Bush. Each of those buildings looks like something you’d see on a college campus, in no small part because, at least with regard to the Bush libraries, they are.

From Feb. 23: In bars, the counter and stools are placed at a height that puts those sitting and standing at the same eye-level. The height of the counter and matching stools is so well established at between 40 to 42 inches that it’s known as “bar height.” Eliminating this 12-inch difference naturally engineers conversations between strangers who are now both sitting and standing face-to-face. That 12-inch difference makes casual conversations much more likely to happen. By this logic, in order to facilitate communication and collaboration, we should make our workplaces more like bars. Without the drinking.

From July 13: Hotels, they are a'changin', as hoteliers develop properties that cater to the younger, tech-savvy generations. New and older brands are making moves to do away with the beige, interact via apps, double as co-working and social spaces, and score shareable selfie love along the way. But don't call them "millennial hotels." While many of the perks and amenities are inspired by research on the group, the properties included below — Hyatt Centric, Radisson RED, Hotel EMC2, and Residence Inn by Marriott — aim to appeal to guests of all ages.

From July 6: Well-designed workplaces often create environments that make their employees better thinkers, often without even realizing they have done it. But some are now actively turning to the science to help free their workers' minds.

From March 9: Companies continue to focus a great deal of attention on building better office environments: open floor plans, formal and informal collaboration spaces, increased natural light, and even a bit of whimsy are all accepted design practices. And, like all of the other aspects of our lives, technology continues to be integrated into our workspace. The next generation of spaces will need to build on this focus on human performance with an increased awareness of the changes going on in the work experience – specifically communication, workforce inclusion, and a remote workforce.

From June 29: The U.S. Census projects that there will be approximately 83.7 million adults over the age of 65 in the U.S. by the year 2050 — double the number in 2012. With the explosion of the elderly population, designers are facing a challenge — and an opportunity — to deliberately design products that accommodate the changes that come with age.

From Sept. 28: Open plan offices seem to have become the default design for workplaces. This is due largely to pragmatic advantages like cost savings and utilization of floor space. However, just because they are popular doesn't mean they are best. According to a University of Leeds review of over 100 open plan studies, staff do tend to feel more sociable and included in such environment.
