Finding creative ways to raise non-dues revenue

Every year, the question of whether to renew membership begs a greater question: Does the association I belong to provide me with sufficient value? In order to create the compelling value that members desire, many associations have to generate more funds than what comes in through membership dues. These associations then turn to sponsors looking for a handout. This sets up a dynamic where the fundraiser feels embarrassed and lacks confidence in the request, and the potential sponsor feels imposed upon and reluctant to give.

A peek into some of the latest association sponsorship trends
Associations Now
More associations are reporting increased revenue from sponsorships. But the news that nearly 40 percent more associations saw an increase in this type of revenue in 2013 compared to 2011 was not terribly surprising to sponsorship expert Pamela Strother, a principal at Sponsorship Specialists. After the recession, when many associations saw membership dues and meetings revenue drop, it became increasingly imperative for them to diversify and develop more customized and well-crafted sponsorship programs, she said. And as the IEG study demonstrates, “more and more associations are getting serious about that.”
