Are you practicing targeted or trawling recruitment?
Trawling is the act of dragging a large net behind a boat and scooping up everything you can. Although it’s the most efficient way to catch sea creatures like shrimp, you also get a lot of things you end up throwing back. Membership can be the same way. Your association has recruitment goals and you want to see continued growth to fill in for non-renewals, but filling your net with members who will only be there a year, because they’re not exactly the right fit for your organization, doesn’t do anyone any good and can actually be much worse than signing fewer numbers to being with.

Nothing says engagement like association video

According to Naylor’s annual association communication benchmarking study, more than two-thirds of associations (68 percent) report that they have integrated video into their communication strategies or soon plan to do so. So what will it take to get the video fence-sitters on board? It’s just a matter of time, according to Aaron Weisberg, video sales manager of Naylor Association Solutions. “Video is the most mobile form of content that members and suppliers demand. Associations shouldn’t only be scouting their competitors’ digital offerings to see if they include video; they should be listening to the rumblings of their membership.”

Associations are in a tough spot, forced to do more with less. So where does marketing fit in? It often struggles to justify its existence, but associations seem to be embracing it as best as they can, according to a new report by Demand Metric Research Corp., a research and advisory firm serving the association industry. The 2014 State of Digital Marketing in Associations benchmarking study was administered mid-October through mid-November, with membership associations holding the largest response rate. The median size was 1,001 to 5,000 members. Here are some key takeaways.

The incoming president announces her priorities. She shares her vision with the board, committees and staff, forecasting a successful leadership year. What could go wrong? Yet 60 days into the term, one of the committee vice chairs is upset. He disagrees with a committee decision and proceeds to advise everyone, "Our committee is a waste of time." The committee's chairman ignores the negativity. Members of the committee tire of the comments and stop attending meetings. The committee has a meltdown, quorums are no longer possible and the vice chair quits. If only someone had told the elected president.
