7. Province consults Manitobans on Power Smart programs

Nov. 28, 2013: Municipal Government Minister Stan Struthers, the lead minister for Manitoba Hydro, wants you to help Manitoba Hydro improve its Power Smart energy conservation program. "As Manitoba's population and economy continue to grow, we need a responsible and balanced approach to meet our growing demand for power," Struthers said recently. "Ensuring we have reliable power and keeping rates among the lowest on the continent requires building more hydro generation while strengthening initiatives like Power Smart that conserve electricity."

6. SaskPower overhauling power grid

Nov. 28, 2013: Saskatchewan's aging power grid needs a major overhaul over the next decade to ensure a reliable supply of power, president and CEO of SaskPower Robert Watson says. "We know there is a problem with the grid, and know we have to make it better and more reliable, but it's not going to happen overnight," Watson said. The biggest challenges in maintaining grid infrastructure is simply the massive geographic size of the province.

5. Forget LED bulbs — The future of interior lighting is lasers

Nov. 21, 2013: Steven DenBaars, a research scientist at UC Santa Barbara, has been working on LED lights for 20 years. He has been instrumental in pushing them to the point that they are the true heir to Edison's electric bulb. But in his own head, and in his lab, DenBaars is already onto the next big thing: Replacing a substantial portion of indoor lights, and the archaic bulb and socket infrastructure on which they depend, with lasers.

4. 2013 Annual Meeting — The year in review

Nov. 21, 2013: The past year has been one of transition for the Manitoba Electrical League, to an association providing and building more value for its members and promoting the electrical industry. We are introducing new programs and services to meet the times and the business environment we are all operating in. Like every other non-profit organization, we are no different in that we have on-going financial challenges, and are continuing and will be doing more financially — building new revenue streams to ensure the long term sustainability of this industry association. The following are some of the highlights of our activities during the past year.

3. On target in Winnipeg

Nov. 28, 2013: A new $23 million structure will be the new home of the Target retail chain in Winnipeg, MB. Stantec Architecture designed the structure, with Bird Construction Company as the general contractor on the project. The electrical contractor is McCaine Electric and the structural steel contractor is Abesco.

2. Peter Bernatsky elected President

Nov. 21, 2013: Peter Bernatsky was elected 2014 President of the Manitoba Electrical League at the association's Annual General Meeting and Gala evening, November 16th in Winnipeg. Peter is currently Managing Partner of Advance Pro. Peter holds a Master's Degree in Political Science/Economics from the University of Manitoba and joined Advance in 1996. In his remarks, he indicated that there are four key areas that the association must address.
