September 3rd: Fall Golf at Pineridge — watch for golf registration announcement in the very near future

November 4th: EAM LED Lighting Trade Show and Control Exposition Fairmont Hotel

November 15th: EAM Gala Night — our biggest networking event of the year

November 19th: EAM Members Annual Business Luncheon

Our educational programs in partnership with Red River College will be announced in the near future. In the 2013 fall and winter semesters, we had 42 participants from member companies take the course offerings.

Manitoba LED Lighting & Control Exposition 2014

The LED Lighting Show and Exposition Exhibitors' registration package for the November 4th show at the Winnipeg Fairmont Hotel is now available. Only 32 booths are available on a first come, first served basis. Registration is online.

The Gala night Committee is hard at work putting an exciting evening together for EAM members November 15th at the Can Ad Inns.

Every effort is being made to kick it up several notches from the November 2013 event.

The Curtis Newton Band will headline the evening entertainment. The Curtis Newton Band is well-known on the local night club circuit and has a great repertoire of music to dance to. Additional entertainment is also being planned.

Tickets will be available for tables of eight or 10.

Members respond to Z462 Arc Flash training online
EAM
Several EAM members are now taking advantage of the Z462 Arc Flash training available from the EAM online education training site. This program initiative has been well received. The program ESTS was developed by Terry Becker, one of Canada's leading electrical safety engineers.

Switchyard contract for SNC-Lavalin
Journal of Commerce
Manitoba Hydro has awarded engineering firm SNC-Lavalin a $112 million contract for the design and construction of the Keewatinoow switchyard project near Winnipeg. SNC said that it will oversee the early stages of the project, including its design and construction, before helping the utility with the commissioning and training of staff.

Non-residential construction in Manitoba sees another quarterly decline

Investment in non-residential construction projects declined modestly in the second quarter of this year in Manitoba, new Statistics Canada figures show. The agency said $393 million was invested in commercial, industrial and institutional building projects during the quarter.

Manitoba Hydro sells electricity to SaskPower

Manitoba Hydro has finalized a deal to sell 25 megawatts of electricity to SaskPower. The deal, which will begin in November 2015 and end in May 2022, will see SaskPower sent the electricity over already existing transmission connections between the two utilities. When combined with a previously announced short-term sale between the two utilities, the two deals are worth more than $100 million, Manitoba Hydro officials said.

Construction of Keeyask generating station kicks off

Construction on the 695-megawatt Keeyask generating station in northern Manitoba officially kicked off recently. The Keeyask Hydropower Limited Partnership said in a statement it officially broke ground today on the new dam, which is a joint effort between Manitoba Hydro and the Tataskweyak Cree Nation, War Lake First Nation, York Factory First Nation and Fox Lake Cree Nation.

SNC-Lavalin secures Manitoba Hydro work

Manitoba Hydro has announced that it has awarded the contract to design and build the Keewatinoow 230-kV Switchyard to SNC-Lavalin. The $112 million project will be located 775 kilometres northeast of Winnipeg and will be the largest fixed-price EPC contract ever issued by Manitoba Hydro. Keewatinoow will transfer power from the Nelson River's northern generating station to Manitoba Hydro customers in the south through the future Bipole III HCDV transmission line.

Polo Park mall adding new stores in $50 million redevelopment

Polo Park management hopes to increase foot traffic at the mall by 10 per cent by redeveloping almost 10 per cent of its floor space to make room for new popular retailers. Polo Park recently announced plans for 114,000 square feet of "redeveloped and new space" that will house several retailers making their first appearance in Winnipeg.
