Neurofeedback Can Be Used to Treat Anxiety Disorders, Research Shows
ACA Publications
Neurofeedback (NFB) interventions can be used to help clients reduce symptoms of anxiety-spectrum disorders, and health insurers should reconsider policies that deny reimbursement, say scholars writing in the Journal of Counseling & Development (JCD). NFB is a counseling intervention that uses noninvasive scalp sensors to provide clients with real-time feedback on changes in their brain's electrical activity, so they can learn to control it. Pooling data from 26 prior NFB studies, the authors of a new meta-analysis found statistically significant evidence that NFB treatment can reduce symptoms of anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder. The findings are important, they say, because many health insurers still classify NFB as "experimental" and will not pay for it. Urging insurers to reconsider, the authors also call on mental health training programs to offer more coursework in NFB and other brain-based interventions.
Note. Full-text content from JCD is free to ACA members by logging into the ACA website, and is available on a pay-per-view basis to nonmembers.
