Study of Justice-Involved Teens Supports Use of Online Interventions Post-COVID
ACA Publications
With the post-pandemic return to in-person education, some may be wondering whether online counseling or psychoeducation programs should continue — particularly in mandatory-treatment settings. A study in the Journal of Addictions & Offender Counseling focused on teens who completed a mandatory anger management program, which had been modified for online use, during COVID-19. About half of the 88 adolescents, who were all under community supervision in Texas, were on probation for some form of assault. After completing the online program — and regardless of gender, ethnicity or grade level — the teens showed statistically significant decreases on an anger rating scale, with promising findings regarding recidivism as well. The researchers suggest that clinicians should consider cost, accessibility and other advantages of continuing to offer remote learning modules as an option in both agency and private-practice settings, despite relaxation of COVID-19 safety measures.
Note: Full-text content from JAOC is free to International Association of Addictions and Offender Counselors members by logging into the ACA website and available on pay-per-view to nonmembers.

Mental Health Access: Your Voice Matters and Your Help Is Needed Today
We're getting closer with each message you send to your member of Congress! The Mental Health Access Improvement Act now has 25 of the 50 U.S. senators as co-sponsors. We would also encourage you to join us at ACA's 2022 Virtual Hill Day, which will be held Wednesday, June 15, from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. (Eastern). Attendees will be provided with advocacy resources and gain an opportunity to speak directly with congressional leaders on issues affecting the counseling community. Registration will go live on May 16. Please visit counseling.org to register.
For questions, please reach out to the Government Affairs and Public Policy team by email at advocacy@counseling.org.

Living With Night Terrors and Daymares
Psychology Today
Bruce Bauman writes: Three weeks ago, I awoke from a screaming nightmare that my wife Suzan said was as loud and petrifying as any she's heard during our 30 years together. I do not need to read my diary filled with hundreds of dreams and nightmares to replay the turbulent sounds I emit during my nocturnal inner life, even if I don't always remember the content.

You're Not Broken: The Mental Health Effects of Infertility
PsychCentral
Andrea Rice writes: For most of my life, I didn't give the prospect of motherhood much thought. My mother wasn't around very much, which means that I don't understand — or remember — the primal connection of a mother-child bond. The word "mother" used to make me sad and angry, but when I think of what "mother" means to me now, all that comes to mind is "unknown."
