AFT's Weingarten denounces anti-executive action legislation

On behalf of the 1.6 million members of the American Federation of Teachers, I urge you to oppose the Preventing Executive Overreach on Immigration Act (H.R. 5759). The bill, sponsored by Rep. Ted Yoho, R-Fla., would prevent the implementation of President Barack Obama's Nov. 20 executive action on immigration. The executive action would provide protection to millions of aspiring Americans, keep families together and expand our economy. It is a measure that should be supported by all Americans. Removing the protections granted in the action would subject nearly 5 million immigrants and their families to the fear of separation and deportation.More

If you want to graduate from high school in North Dakota, you better start buffing up on your American history and government. Lawmakers in North Dakota unveiled legislation Monday that would require high school students to get 60 questions right on a 100-question civics test before they graduate. These range from the number of justices on the Supreme Court to the number of amendments to the Constitution. Immigrants hoping to become US citizens must correctly answer six of 10 questions randomly chosen from the 100-question test.More

Some people may be pre-wired to be bilingual

Some people's brains seem pre-wired to acquire a second language, new research suggests. But anyone who tries to move beyond their mother tongue will likely gain a brain boost, the small study finds. The brain "becomes more connected and integrated after learning," said study co-author Ping Li, co-director of the Center for Brain, Behavior and Cognition at Pennsylvania State University. But it's even more interesting, Li said, that "the brain networks of the more successful learners are better connected even before learning takes place."More

As America's population grows ever more diverse, smart companies are realizing they need bilingual employees. That's just common sense. Now comes evidence proving that dual-language speakers may be faster thinkers and more productive, even in roles that don't necessarily require them to utilize their second language. A study conducted by Northwestern University and the University of Houston and published in the journal Brain and Language found that bilinguals were more efficient at making linguistic and visual connections, possibly because of the mental acuity required to constantly balance two competing vocabularies.More

Steamboat Springs School District top in Colorado for work with English language learners

The Steamboat Springs School District was recognized as the top performing school district in Colorado for its work improving academic growth among English language learners. The district received an English Language Proficiency Act Excellence Award as well as its fifth consecutive Accredited with Distinction designation and numerous other awards during a ceremony in Denver. Strawberry Park Elementary School Principal Tracy Stoddard accepted the awards from the Colorado Department of Education on behalf of the district.More

In Baltimore area schools, young students are learning a foreign language

A little girl with pigtails and composure twirled in a pirouette with the rest of her classmates at Padonia International Elementary School, responding to a question from their teacher in Spanish. "Cual es tu deporte favorito?" said teacher Christine Reier, asking her what her favorite sport is. This is what learning Spanish looks like in one of Baltimore County's 10 elementary schools, where a foreign language is being taught for the first time this year. Starting in the fourth grade, students are immersed in the Spanish language several times each week. The format this day is a fast-paced activity, with not a word spoken by the teacher in English.More

Botetourt County, Va., after school program makes a difference for English language learners
The saying goes — it takes a village to raise a child and one local program is reaching out to children of immigrants. Orchard Hills Achievement Center in Botetourt County, Virginia, has grown from a one-day-a-week summer program to year-round. When students in the "Homework Helps" program arrive at Orchard Hills Achievement Center after school, they don't immediately pull out assignments and start working. They first have a snack and spend some time talking with their classroom volunteer. This is how they build relationships one child at a time.More
