A deal to merge Kraft Foods with Heinz and create the third-largest food and beverage company in North America will likely lead to top products in the control of fewer companies, as rival businesses are expected to compete by purchasing more brands. But with firms eyeing deals and acquisitions as a way to cut their costs, the consumer is unlikely to see changes in the prices of packaged foods.

Government Relations Update: NAC and NATO to present FDA Menu Labeling Guide at CinemaCon

On Wednesday, April 22, NAC and NATO will present: The How-To-Guide for Compliance With the FDA Menu Labeling Regulations. The session will take place from 3:30 – 4:45 p.m. at CinemaCon. This panel will feature Dr. Claudine Kavanaugh of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and will discuss all aspects of the new regulations while providing real-world and practical solutions so that you may be able to comply effective Dec. 1.

Memphis CCM class to feature tours and ballgame

The National Association of Concessionaires (NAC) has announced an exciting development in conjunction with its upcoming Concession Manager Certification (CCM). This class will be held on April 15-18 in Memphis, Tennessee. In addition to the course, NAC Board member George Raub, IV, CCM of Delaware North Sportservice has graciously offered to host the class to a game and tour of AutoZone Park and show the recently completed renovations to the ballpark. Course instructor Larry Etter, CCM, Senior Vice President of Theatre Services with Malco Theatres and Director of Education for NAC, will also give the class a tour of a recently opened Malco Theatre.

The Concession & Hospitality Expo will take place on July 21-24 at the Hyatt Regency Cincinnati and the adjacent Duke Energy Convention Center. The 2015 Trade Show is at the Duke Energy Center right across the street from the Hyatt Regency Cincinnati and will be held on Wednesday, July 22 (1 – 4 p.m.) and Thursday, July 23 (2 – 4 p.m.) and is open to full and tabletop displays.

Booming economy leads to wage growth in hospitality industry

It's a good time to be working in the hospitality industry, especially restaurants and bars. Business is booming and so is the job market in this sector. The hospitality industry is also looking at a healthy wage growth curve that promises to boost the economy even further. Though overall employment figures have steadily risen since the recession ended, wages have been more or less stagnant. Not so anymore at restaurants as wages saw more than a 3 percent rise in 2014, according to the Labor Department.

The half-dozen NASCAR Camping World Truck Series crewmen stood in the Martinsville Speedway rain, ravenous and oblivious. Ravenous, as they two-fisted the racetrack's signature concession, scarfing down the first hot dog in one hand as they held a second in the other, at the ready to vanish. Oblivious, as they were totally unaware of the controversy that had raged around those trademark red wieners in the days leading up to this, Martinsville's 133rd NASCAR Sprint Cup race weekend.

Blue Bell recalls ice cream cups because of possible contamination

Blue Bell is recalling three 3 oz. institutional/food service ice cream cups because they could be potentially contaminated with an infectious organism. Chocolate, strawberry, and vanilla ice cream flavored cups with lids could contain Listeria monocytogenes, an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, elderly and others with poor immune systems.

'Keurig for Jell-O shots' makes gelatin shooters in minutes

Need 20 Jell-O shots in 10 minutes? There's a machine for that. The Jevo uses gelatin pods to make trays of boozy Jell-O shots in minutes, compared to the 3-4 hours it takes for traditional edible shots to set. The boxy gadget was inspired by other automated drink devices, Food and Beverage Innovations CEO Jeff Jetton said.
