This hot dog inspired by Johnny Manziel could be the messiest thing at the ballpark
USA Today
A minor league baseball team in Ohio is the latest to join in on the hype surrounding Johnny Manziel and the Browns. The Akron Rubber Ducks introduced the "Johnny Footlong" to their menu. It's an 8-ounce hot dog with Texas Jack chili, shredded pepper jack cheese and Sriracha sauce, which sounds a combination of amazing and completely heartburn-inducing at the same time.

Starbucks announced that it would begin selling "handcrafted sodas." These "Fizzio" sodas are being marketed as something different and superior to regular soda — no artificial flavors! no preservatives! no high fructose corn syrup! — but what the company is really selling is a promise that they can sell you any drink (to go with a variety of food options) you could possibly desire.

Do you have the right focus?
By Adrian Davis
Typically, 80 percent of your profitability comes from 20 percent of your accounts. Yet, if you are like most businesses, you spread your attention across 100 percent of your accounts while you scramble to acquire even more. How many customers do you have that purchase little from you, and yet are demanding in terms of the support and attention they require? At the other extreme are those customers that do purchase a lot from you, but they exploit you. And then there's the right-fit customer.

For popcorn kernels, it's a long journey from farm to microwave
The World-Herald
A popcorn kernel's journey from farm to microwave is mostly uncomplicated until it arrives at the American Pop Corn Co. plant northeast of Sioux City, Iowa. Semitrailers loaded with numerous varieties of popcorn — some destined for microwaves, others for air poppers and oil poppers — traverse the 14-acre property the company calls home.

School vending machines ditch Oreos, Fritos for 'smart snacks'
Chicago Tribune
The school vending machine is no longer an easy place to satisfy a snack craving. Under new national nutritional guidelines, schools that are part of the national school lunch program can no longer sell treats such as Oreos and Fritos. The "Smart Snacks in School" program from the U.S. Department of Agriculture covers foods and drinks sold in vending machines, on cafeteria a la carte menus and for club fundraisers during school hours.

Frito-Lay dominates US salty snacks, but rising cracker sales could stall growth
Forbes
PepsiCo's name might be synonymous with beverages, particularly carbonated soft drinks, but the company's snacks division comprising sweet, savory and dairy snacks and breakfast foods together constitute more than half the net revenues. As the soda slump in developed markets continues to stall growth in the beverage category for PepsiCo, the company expects two-thirds of its top line growth to come from its booming snacks division this year.

Happy 40th birthday to the barcode
CBSNews.com
Forty years ago, a cashier at a Marsh Supermarket in Troy, Ohio, scanned a 10-pack of Wrigley's Juicy Fruit gum bearing an odd-looking set of alternating black and white lines. The barcode had been designed by IBM engineer George Laurer to help grocery stores track each piece of merchandise sold. With that first scan, the Uniform Product Code was born.

The new rules of HR: How to hire better talent
By Scott Steinberg
Finding job applicants with the right skills can be challenging under any circumstances, let alone rapidly-shifting business environments such as those we find ourselves operating in at present. Doubly so, say a rising tide of executive directors and boards, as the talents and capabilities needed to succeed tomorrow will be vastly different from those needed today. Happily, finding talent from inside or outside your organization capable of filling and excelling at leadership roles isn't as challenging as it seems — provided you know what traits to look for in prospective recruits.
