Food companies fight for trans fats to stay
The Associated Press via New York Daily News
Shortening, pie crusts, brownies and microwave popcorn could be partially exempt from a government phase out of artificial trans fats — if the food industry gets its way. The Food and Drug Administration announced in June that it is requiring food companies to largely rid their foods of the artery-clogging fats over the next three years, calling them a threat to public health. But food companies can still petition to use them sparingly.

At-movie dining is catching on
The Sacramento Bee
Dinner and a movie, a perfect night out in theory, can be a stressful reality. A workday that ends at 5 or 6 p.m. leaves only a small window to freshen up, fight traffic and dine before a film starts at 7 or 7:30. Eating after the movie also can be problematic. Though many local restaurants claim to be open until 10, the hostess will side-eye you if you try to roll in at 9:45, after taking in the latest Peter Jackson/Tolkien epic. Thankfully, the convenient option of dinner with a movie now is possible locally, at Rocklin's Studio Movie Grill, and downtown Sacramento's Esquire Imax theater.

Why don't Chicagoans put ketchup on hot dogs?
Chicago Tribune
The great condiment conundrum kicked off this year's Chicago Hot Dog Fest, a family-friendly food-and-music celebration of the iconic sausage, at the Chicago History Museum. For among the hot dog experts appearing on the speakers stage Aug. 7 was Bill Savage, whose topic was "Ketchup: The Condiment of Controversy." "There is no other condiment that defines identity the way ketchup does," says Savage, who teaches Chicago literature at Northwestern University. "It's silly, but it opens up a lot of historical questions and a lot of questions about food culture and popular culture."
