Competition between the soda giants is nothing new. PepsiCo and Coca-Cola have been always focused on being one step ahead of each other. Amidst growing health awareness and changing perceptions, Americans spent $70 billion on sodas in 2014 — a 25 percent decline from 1998. This has led the soda giants to look at emerging markets like Asia, Africa and Latin America. While that plan is cooking, they have new plans for the home market as well, which includes the night scene.

New York City has mandated that any food item with value of 2,500 mg of sodium or greater (which is the recommended daily allowance for sodium) must display a designating salt icon on their menus and menu boards. Most of the standard concession and hospitality food and beverage items will certainly not need to concern themselves with this new sodium regulation, however, in an attempt to be as transparent as possible The National Association of Concessionaires (NAC) is requesting all Supplier members to forward us their product information sheets that have determined the sodium content of your products. We will create a Sodium Database and make this information available to all NAC members behind the Member's Area on naconline.org.

You could be a 25-year-old Instagram-loving foodie, who shares daily updates of your homemade mini-meals and trendy restaurant tapas. Or a 41-year-old father, who indulges in a daily Starbucks run with co-workers. Or a 65-year-old retiree who isn't up to preparing dinner anymore and opts for a bowl of popcorn or ice cream instead.

Some cheese products that are labeled "100 percent Real Parmesan" aren't actually made with any parmesan. An investigation by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration found that one cheesemaker, Castle Cheese Inc., made its "real" parmesan with a combination of Swiss, white cheddar, Havarti, mozzarella, and cellulose, a filler made from wood pulp that acts as an anti-clumping agent.

There are two reasons why businesses change their packaging: as a strategy to increase sales or to try and cut costs.
However, experts in multisensory integration claim the type of packaging and its color or heaviness is key in the perception of the taste of food.
While food science and technology has mostly focused on changing the sensory attributes of the food itself, the characteristics of the packaging could be crucial in consumers liking a product or not, which means it could ultimately have an important influence on its sales.
