Lapidus Classic moves to Bali Hai

The National Association of Concessionaires has announced that the 31st Al Lapidus/Variety Boys & Girls Club Scholarship Golf Classic will be moving to the Bali Hai Golf Club next to Mandalay Bay on the Strip in Las Vegas. The tournament is held each year on the first day of CinemaCon, April 20, 2015.

Government Relations update: EPA Proposed Regulation on Refrigerants and Insulation

National American Association of Food Equipment Manufacturers coordinated a Conference Call Sept. 17 from their Washington, D.C., offices with a myriad of interested association public policy representatives to respond and inform regarding a U.S. EPA Proposed Regulation on Refrigerants and Insulation to Protect the Stratospheric Ozone. Under this proposed rule, various hydro fluorocarbons and blends that were previously listed as acceptable alternatives to ozone-depleting substances (ODS) will be listed as unacceptable for some uses.

Report: Major US food-makers cut 6.4 trillion calories from products

Sixteen major food and beverage companies have made good on their pledge to cut calories in their U.S. products, a new report finds. The companies, acting together through the Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation, pledged to remove 1 trillion calories from the market between 2007 and 2012 and 1.5 trillion by 2015. They've actually reduced far more: 6.4 trillion calories.

UC Davis and Mars Inc. announce plans to create innovation institute focusing on food, agriculture and health

The University of California, Davis, through its World Food Center, and Mars, Incorporated have agreed to pursue the establishment of a new institute designed to deliver big-impact, Silicon Valley-type breakthroughs in food, agriculture and health. An independent advisory committee chaired by Bruce German, professor of food science and technology at UC Davis, will facilitate the design and development of the Innovation Institute for Food and Health prior to its launch in January.

Bears games offer kosher food option

In the latest of a series of moves to add more local flair to Soldier Field's food and beverage choices, Aramark Sports and Entertainment Services LLC this season has teamed with a prominent concessionaire at McCormick Place on two new local grill carts at the stadium.

There is a lesson to be learned from McDonald's recent spate of woes. The food business is by far the biggest global industry, and when you have built a brand as large as McDonald's you cannot afford to go wrong. You cannot blame the economy or a remote location in an overseas processing factory for your woes. The first and foremost duty of being a leading brand is to anticipate and avoid mistakes at all costs. Not surprisingly, McDonald's has reported dismal sales in the last three months, ever since a food scandal in China forced stores to close because of contaminated meat.
