CELEBRATE THE REUNION

MIKE AND IKE® are back together with a cool new look and enhanced flavors.

To lure young, movie theaters shake, smell and spritz
The New York Times
Having tried 3-D films, earsplitting sound systems and even alcohol sales in pursuit of younger moviegoers, some theater chains are now installing undulating seats, scent machines and 270-degree screens. For an $8 premium, a Regal theater even sprays patrons with water and pumps scents into the auditorium. Can't cope with two hours away from your smartphone? One theater company has found success with instant on-screen messaging — the texted comments pop up next to the action.

NAC Menu Labeling Assistance Initiative
NAC
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has released the final rule on Food Labeling: Nutrition Labeling of Standard Menu Items in Restaurants and Similar Retail Food Establishments under the Affordable Care Act. The final rule is a reversal from the original proposed rule which was published in 2011. The proposed rule originally exempted movie theaters, hotels, amusement parks and other venues whose primary business activity was not the sale of food to consumers. The final rule now includes these venues as well as covers liquor which was previously exempted.

As a result, NAC is developing a program to assist our members. Details of the initiative are in process, but NAC will be available with dietetic and legal counsel to make the mandates more tolerable effective December 1, 2015. We will be working with manufacturers, digital signage companies and theater and food service operators to develop a template and a process for all to use. More to come after the holidays.

Reducing portion sizes: Cutting calories or cheating consumers?
ConfectioneryNews.com
Shrinking a confection is a surefire way to reduce calories, but can it aggravate consumers and even discourage sales? In the U.K., leading confectioners such as Mars, Nestle and Mondelez have signed up to a 250 calorie cap on single-serve confectionery as the U.K. government and retailers push for lower calorie items to address rising obesity rates. Elsewhere, Hungary, Mexico, Denmark and Finland have imposed "junk food" taxes, while France and some U.S. states introduced soda taxes.

8 qualities of leaders who deliver value every day
Entrepreneur
Leadership is a means to create value for others through self-expression. How a leader shows up is everything as it sets the tone for others to either emulate or evade. Making the jump from manager to director to leader is never a clear-cut process. The position itself changes, but the "how to lead" skills are never made clear, so what happens is newly appointed leaders apply yesterday's management tactics to today's leadership demands, and the two don't play nicely.

What a Thanksgiving 'turkey' made of hot dogs teaches us about food marketing
The Washington Post

Would you try bubble gum broccoli or Doritos Mountain Dew?
Food Dive
Putting foods and concepts that don't seem like they'd go together isn't always such a bad idea. In fact, they can become extremely popular. Take a corn dog, for example, or candy apples. The food industry is filled with examples of this phenomenon. Pop culture-inspired goods take an interesting approach, playing off multiple focuses customers may have, while Halloween always seems to be a fun time for food industry experimentation as children literally go door to door with sacks ready to be filled with all different kinds of candy.
