Making sense of the FDA's menu-labeling rule

Talk of menu labeling has swirled around the industry since 2010, with the passage of section 4205 of the Affordable Care Act. On Nov. 25, the Food and Drug Administration announced the long-awaited menu-labeling regulations, delineating the proper steps restaurants and other food services must take to establish calorie counts on menus by the Dec. 1, 2015, deadline.

NAC adopts logo for Menu Labeling Assistance Initiative

The National Association of Concessionaires (NAC) has unveiled the logo that it will use for its Menu Labeling Assistance Initiative. The program is in response to the final rule on Food Labeling: Nutrition Labeling of Standard Menu Items in Restaurants and Similar Retail Food Establishments under the Affordable Care Act recently announced by the FDA. Compliance with these new mandates must take place by Dec. 1, 2015. Click here to see the logo.

Eating all your vegetables might be easier in 2015 than in recent years as they increasingly show up in unexpected places, including desserts and drinks, according to the International Food Network. The product firm development also expects to see in 2015 more foods made with tea, sprouted and ancient grains, bold flavors and regional ingredients, as well as more foods bearing clean labels, said Sarah Rosemarino, sales and marketing coordinator for IFN.

Cities struggle to develop fair food truck rules

Snack wars: Can beans become the new potatoes?

Potato chip sales are struggling, and corn-based chips may be a gateway snack to obesity. Salty snacks are a $16 billion business, but Americans are increasingly looking for something healthier. Like beans. Beanitos are chips made from beans, the brainchild of Doug Foreman, who created Guiltless Gourmet. "I like things that are high in protein," said Foreman. "When you try to find a snack that is high protein, there just wasn't anything out there." Foreman and his brother started the company nearly five years ago after finally creating a chip based on beans that tastes almost exactly like a regular tortilla chip.
