Deck builders shell out extra for capstocks

The latest trend in composite decking has been going all vinyl-but just on the surface. Over the last year, several major manufacturers have introduced hybrid lines: composite deck boards encased in an all-vinyl "capstock." The harder outside shell is said to provide greater durability and resistance to staining, scratching, fading and moisture. It can be cleaned up with soap and water, and produced in rich, dark colors.More

Polymera starts to produce wood-plastic composites

Three industry veterans have started Polymera Inc. to produce wood-plastic composite materials and custom profiles. Herb Hutchison, vice president and general manager, said Polymera should begin production at the end of the first quarter, in a 160,000-square-foot factory in Hebron, near Columbus, Ohio.More

November construction starts jump 35 percent from October

Reed Construction Data announced recently that the year-to-date value of construction starts through November, excluding residential contracts, totaled $241.5 billion, 1.0 percent less than during the same months in 2009. Individual month of November starts were 35 percent above October and 13 percent above last November. November is a seasonally weak month for construction starts. Only February is weaker. So the November starts surge is much stronger than the nominal 35 percent gain.More
