Wood deck addition is the third best home improvement project for your money
U.S. News and World Reports    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Before you get started on that family room addition, take a moment to consider its potential return. Each year, Remodeling magazine's Cost vs. Value Report provides a fascinating look at the percentage of a home improvement project's costs that are likely to be recouped at resale. The report finds that not all home remodeling jobs are created equal—you'll probably get more of your investment back after building a wooden deck, for example, than adding a sunroom. More

Making built-in benches for your deck
Better Homes and Gardens    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail
Built-in benches bring more to a deck than a place to sit down. They can help define space at the edges of the deck or within its perimeter, accent the deck, or double as storage units. You can incorporate a bench between permanent planters, you can build movable freestanding benches (although 2x furniture can get heavy), or you can take advantage of the strength of dimension lumber and your deck framing and build these permanent benches. Homebuilders hope boomers beat path to their door again
The Dallas Morning News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Baby boomer buyers fueled a big run-up in U.S. home construction and sales in the 1970s and 1980s. Now beleaguered homebuilders say they're hoping aging boomers, who are just entering retirement age, will once again give them robust housing sales. "We believe this segment of the market is going to lead the housing industry toward recovery as the market turns around," said Sharon Dworkin Bell, a senior staff vice president of the National Association of Home Builders. The 55-plus homebuyer is being targeted by builders all over the country and was a focus of the industry's annual conference held recently in Las Vegas. More

How small businesses can avoid a tax time train wreck
The Associated Press via The Seattle Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
For some small-business owners, income tax filing season feels like a slow-motion train wreck. These are often owners who tend to be disorganized and unable to keep good records. Instead of keeping their companies' books with a small-business accounting program, they use a stack of overstuffed file folders or worse, boxes and shopping bags. They often end up spending hundreds of extra dollars paying their accountants to sort through the whole mess — provided the accountants will even agree to deal with it. More

Word-of-mouth helps contractor build business
The Frederick News-Post    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Releasing a fork from his weathered hands, David Rosenberger of Mount Airy leans back after dinner with his wife, Deborah, and son, Carson. The nightly ritual ends each 10-hour day of labor, which might include building decks, remodeling bathrooms and renovating office buildings. But relaxation is rare for the independent business owner and contractor, because after the day ends, an evening full of writing job orders and customer invoices begins. More
