Taxpayers’ personal information and tax account data remain at risk of being leaked from the Internal Revenue Service’s computer networks despite progress on a data loss prevention program, according to a new report. The IRS began a program known as the Safeguarding Personally Identifiable Information Data Extracts Project, which is responsible for implementing the data loss prevention solution, in 2010.

In a highly publicized new private letter ruling, the IRS has effectively approved a medical deduction for a portion of the cost of a genetic testing service based on DNA samples. The company involved in the ruling has been identified by numerous media sources as 23andMe, a prominent promoter of genetic testing to determine health status, traits and ancestry.

The U.S. and France reached a deal on European nation’s controversial digital tax on Big Tech, President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron said at the recent G7 summit. The 3% tax, which France passed in July, targets Big Tech companies like Facebook, Amazon, Google and Apple – any company that makes more than 750 million euros ($830 million) annually from “digital activities.”

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) recently warned taxpayers and tax professionals about a new IRS impersonation scam email. The email subject line may vary, but according to the IRS, recent examples use phrases like "Automatic Income Tax Reminder" or "Electronic Tax Return Reminder." The emails include links that are meant to look like the IRS website with details about the taxpayer's refund, electronic return or tax account.

After Coinbase released data on over 14,000 users to the Internal Revenue Service in 2018, cryptocurrency traders have been bracing for what’s to come next regarding IRS enforcement, as reported by The Wall Street Journal. The first and second wave of that enforcement seems to have recently landed in thousands of mailboxes nationwide. IRS Letter 6174 is designed to motivate cryptocurrency traders to comply with federal tax laws, revealing just enough information to bring fear into the hearts of anyone who may have misreported income made from sales of cryptocurrency.

Recent tax return data from the IRS indicates changes to charitable giving deductions. The data on individual 2018 federal tax returns through July showed nearly 22 million fewer returns took deductions on charitable giving compared with 2017. About 12 million returns claimed the deduction this year to the tune of $103 billion. Still, the National Council of Nonprofits cautioned against putting too much stock in the data.
