| LATEST NEWS FOR PRINCIPALS |
District Administration Magazine
How has the principal's role changed over the years? It has come almost full circle. Many years ago the position was called headmaster, and that person was the instructional leader. Over the years the principal became more of a facilities manager, someone who made sure the buses came on time and who served as a disciplinarian. Now the principal, in short, is responsible for the culture of the building, for the high expectations for both students and faculty and everyone who works in the school, as well as being the chief, the convener of professional learning communities and, of course, being an excellent learner himself or herself.

Education DIVE
With a shifting economy continuing to necessitate a move away from the industrial, one-size-fits-all model of the past century-plus, K-12 education is in the midst of a sea change. As a new political and policy era dawns in Washington, the status of the nation's schools remains stable, though still earning a grade of C from Quality Counts 2017, the 21st annual report card issued by the Education Week Research Center. The C corresponds to a score of 74.2, which is nearly identical to the 74.4 the nation posted in 2016, when it also received a C. The steadiness of national results, notwithstanding, a handful of states saw their scores increase or decline by a full point or more.

Education World
As Education World reported in our look back at the top education stories of 2016, one of the biggest stories happened in May when the U.S. Department of Education and Justice released a joint guidance advising the country's school districts to let students use school facilities according to gender identity, not gender at birth. The guidance created immediate backlash and revealed a nation divided; while some states had already been in the process of creating lenient policies inclusive of students regardless of their gender identity, other states had been in the process of doing the exact opposite.

After being hired over the summer, a new teacher was eager to get into the room to start decorating her space in anticipation of the first day of school. She was shocked to find an empty, barren room with paint peeling from the walls and stains on the ceiling tiles. Her principal told her there was no money in the budget to paint the room but agreed to let her fund the project on her own. On her first day, she learned one of the hardest lessons of any new teacher: It is expensive to be a teacher.

A new survey from The Learning Counsel finds that nearly four in five (78 percent) students have access to a computing device for "a good portion of the school day" or longer. Sponsored by Ruckus Wireless, the third annual Digital Curriculum Strategy Survey and Assessment Tool is based on responses from more than 700 districts and schools in the United States. Three top trends among the findings were that tablets are losing popularity, Chromebooks have seen a more significant gain in popularity than other devices and there is no consensus among schools as to which devices are best depending upon student age.

The News & Observer
The average school principal's pay in North Carolina, $64,209, ranks near the bottom in national surveys, and the truth is that even many parents who are well-informed about school issues probably don't know that. Teacher pay, even with recent paltry increases, also is inadequate, but because principals do make more than teachers, it's easy to overlook them. Now, legislators are preparing to address the issue of pay. Sen. Jerry Tillman said, "We haven't done anything for administrators in a long time."

With the Kansas legislative session six days away, we're starting to see some early bills filed by lawmakers. One bill filed, if passed, could impact school buses in the state by requiring seat belts on all of them. The bill was done so at least in part in response to the November Chattanooga, Tenn. bus crash that killed six children. The bill's sponsor, a Republican representative from Clay Center, says the bill was filed at the request of her constituents.

Nearly two years after Montgomery County leaders voted to start the school day later so teenagers could get more sleep, the debate that many thought was settled shows signs of making a comeback in Maryland's largest school system. Principals in elementary schools have been speaking out about the toll of schedule changes — drowsy children, longer bus rides, families strapped for child care. Employee unions are urging a return to the school hours of old, saying it would be best for students and staff. But parents who support later school days have weighed in, too, with many emailing letters backing the changes adopted in early 2015.
