The vote comes after more than 80,000 students statewide — 41 percent — failed end-of-course tests in Math I and Math II. Making kids work on goals The Wall Street Journal Share ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() In a recent study in the Journal of Applied Psychology, college students who completed an intensive written exercise identifying their goals and mapping out steps to reach them posted a significant increase in grades and credits earned, compared with other students. Yet a majority of U.S. students lack faith in their ability to reach their goals, according to a nationally representative survey of 642 students last year. Although children begin to form their ideas about what they can and can't achieve by age 7 or 8, a Gallup study found that only 42 percent of students ages 10 to 18 say they are energetically pursuing their goals. And only 35 percent strongly believe they can find ways around obstacles to their goals. More

For five years, Gulf Elementary has used a student response system known as Qwizdom. Each student has a hand-held remote which he or she uses to answer multiple-choice teacher-designed questions displayed on a Smartboard. The students' results are sent electronically and instantly to the teacher's hand-held remote so he or she can quickly analyze student performance, trouble areas and strengths. The bill requires full-day students in elementary school to have 30 minutes of physical activity during each school day. Schools wouldn't be allowed to substitute recess for physical education classes. Based on a similar plan in post-Katrina New Orleans, the Renaissance Plan 2012 would lease the buildings and equipment to charter operators, who would run the buildings as public school academies in the fall. New Mexico Senate OKs teacher/principal evaluation plan The Washington Examiner Share ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Teachers would be evaluated based on the achievement of their students under a New Mexico Senate-passed proposal that lays the groundwork for merit pay for educators. The legislation is part of Republican Gov. Susana Martinez's plan for improving New Mexico's public schools. In some instances, at least 40 percent of a teacher's evaluation will be based on "student academic growth" as measured by standards-based assessments.
