How a counselor shortage is hurting students struggling with anxiety, depression
USA Today via Yahoo
For schools in under-resourced communities, finding enough counselors has always been a challenge. The American School Counselor Association recommends that schools have no more than 250 students per counselor. But only 4.2% of schools located in city centers meet that recommendation. Suburban schools are twice as likely to do so, according to a report from the University of New Hampshire Carsey School of Public Policy.

Using family interviews to increase equity and engagement in science
Edutopia
Building on the experiences, knowledge, and histories that students bring to class improves learning and engagement. One powerful tool that can enable this is the family interview, which helps teachers and peers value what students already know and creates opportunities for bridging school and home. Interviewing family members about science is highlighted in the Next Generation Science Standards’ case studies as a strategy that supports diversity and equity.

We drastically underestimate the importance of brain breaks
Edutopia
In the classroom, “brain breaks should take place before fatigue, boredom, distraction, and inattention set in,” writes neurologist and classroom teacher Judy Willis, and that means they should be far more frequent. “As a general rule,” Willis continues, basing her conclusions in decades of research, “concentrated study of 10 to 15 minutes for elementary school and 20 to 30 minutes for middle and high school students calls for a three- to five-minute break.”

What the 'science of reading' should look like for English-learners. It's not settled
Education Week
Many zero in on the foundations of reading, especially, with the goal of ensuring that teachers are using evidence-based methods for teaching the building blocks of literacy — like identifying letters and sounding out words.
But as more states try to tackle these persistent problems in early reading instruction, some advocates worry that these new initiatives may be introducing problems of their own.

In an effort to make schools greener, the White House is offering billions of dollars
NPR
As the Vice President noted in her speech, many of these changes bring health benefits to students. Cleaner, fresher air in buildings and lower emissions from buses mean fewer asthma attacks and less severe allergies. And, as we've all become hyper aware of recently, improved ventilation in school buildings lowers the risk of spreading some illnesses.

Some states raise teacher pay amid pandemic shortage, but can they retain the educators?
NBC News
But while teachers say they’re grateful for the raises, some wonder if the pay boosts will be enough to retain teachers who feel burned out, disrespected and as though their concerns have been ignored for years. Some said the pay increases are a much-needed start to a broader conversation about what can be done to support teachers, including through policy changes to make housing, health care and child care more affordable and accessible.

.SCHOOL TECHNOLOGY
These students love STEM. Why aren't we letting them be more ambitious?
District Administration Magazine
A handful of states, including North Carolina and Washington, have diversified participation in advanced courses by completely revamping how students are chosen. Instead of putting the onus on learners and their families to find the courses and advocate for enrollment, students in these states are automatically approved for AP and other classes when they meet or exceed grade-level standards

Why the Florida curriculum adoption battle matters to education companies
EdWeek Market Brief
If an academic resource is turned down for state adoption in Florida, that doesn’t mean districts there are flatly banned from buying it. But getting on the approved list carries a power for curriculum providers that has as much to do with the realities of how K-12 systems make purchasing decisions as it does with the letter of state law.

Understanding behavior as communication: A teacher's guide
Understood
Think of the last time a student called out in class, pushed in line, or withdrew by putting their head down on their desk. What was their behavior telling you?
In most cases, behavior is a sign they may not have the skills to tell you what they need. Sometimes, students may not even know what they need. What are your students trying to communicate? What do they need, and how can you help?

All teachers need to teach language and literacy, not just English teachers
The Conversation via Phys
Rather than learning lists of vocabulary or abstract grammar rules, students learn best when they get actively involved in their classroom learning.
This means using many different language skills, such as listening to teachers' explanations, taking notes and developing written arguments.
But not all of these language skills can be transferred to different subjects in the same way.

How to reduce guessing during testing season
Edutopia
As the first state-mandated testing window in two years nears, it’s going to be important that all of us, and our students, know when we’re guessing and why we shouldn’t do it except as a last resort. But there is something even more important that kids can be taught explicitly: what guessing is and how we can overcome the urge to do it.

Learning to the beat: How rap helps students' math recall
K-12 Dive
Educators eager to engage students across a variety of subjects have found that using music, ranging from hip hop to rap, is a captivating method. How can teachers reduce bias?
Tech & Learning
Bias is defined as, “a particular tendency, trend, inclination, feeling, or opinion, especially one that is preconceived or unreasoned.”
In the context of education, this means the way we teach and the decisions we make regarding student learning, behavior, discipline, and support are impacted by the bias that we may unconsciously or consciously hold about students based on the demographic groups they are part of.

Advocates seek more school programming for New York City's newcomer immigrants
Chalkbeat
Choosing a public high school can be a daunting process for New York City families. But it can be particularly confusing for older students who are new to the United States, speak limited to no English, and in some cases, may have gone years without formal schooling.
For years, immigration advocates have cited those students as they pushed the city to create more school programs tailored to the needs of new immigrants — and this year, they may get their wish.
