.PRINCIPAL LEADERSHIP
3 ways to support teachers in flexible learning environments
eSchool News
Flexible learning environments have been a popular buzzword for a while now. Traditionally, flexible learning environments address the flexible use of the physical space as well as how time during classes might be used and how students are grouped during learning. Now, school leaders and educators also have to consider switching between in-person learning and remote learning, and how that applies to the learning environment in place.

Education Week
Schools have a big interest in students getting vaccinated against COVID-19. It protects students, especially those with weakened immune systems who are at greater risk of getting severely ill with COVID-19; and it shields older teachers and school staff from getting sick. Plus, vaccinated children and adolescents are important to stopping the spread and mutation of the coronavirus nationally.

Building leadership skills organically
Chief Learning Officer Magazine
We are all well aware of the variety of impacts the pandemic has had on organizations both large and small in the last 18 months. One of the most worrisome developments is the impact to leadership pipelines.

Where resilience meets leadership: Lessons from the pandemic
Forbes
Jeff Hawkins writes: I’ve enjoyed playing sports my whole life. From a young age, I’ve observed that the difference between who’s on the field and who's not often comes down to work ethic. When I played college sports, there were great athletes at every turn — so winning often came down to grit and perseverance, not talent alone. Throughout my career, I’ve found that this insight rings true for all of life’s arenas, especially when we are faced with adversity.

Department of Education implements TEACH Grant Program changes to benefit teachers and students
U.S. Department of Education
The U.S. Department of Education (ED) recently announced changes to the Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant Program, the only federal student aid grant program that directly benefits teachers working in high-need fields and underserved schools. ED implemented the changes as the Biden-Harris Administration proposes further enhancements to the program through the American Families Plan, which would double the annual grant amount, increase program flexibilities, address high grant-to-loan conversion rates, and ensure better outcomes for teachers and students.

Boosting teacher diversity requires bold, extensive action
The Brookings Institution
Before the American Rescue Plan passed in March, steering nearly $130 billion into public school coffers, there was growing concern about the potential for widespread layoffs and what this might mean for the teacher workforce. Public school systems in two states began exploring policies that would prioritize teachers' racial diversity over seniority in the event of layoffs. Worried that pandemic-induced budget shortfalls will lead to staff cuts that threatened to erase the progress on workforce diversity that many locales have seen in recent years, policymakers and leaders eyed pre-emptive action.

Diversity in the classroom: Why representation matters
Diverse Education
Teacher diversity is invaluable for all students. Having a teacher of color at the helm of a classroom benefits all learners, both academically and through deep and enriching social emotional connections. However, according to The White House’s fact sheet for The American Families Plan, while teachers of color can have a particularly strong impact on students of color, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that only one in five teachers are people of color, compared to more than half of K-12 public school students. That is why President Biden is calling on Congress to invest $9 billion in American teachers, addressing shortages, improving training and supports for teachers, and boosting teacher diversity.

4 ideas to create engaging online learning activities
eSchool News
While most schools plan for full in-person returns in the fall, plans are not 100% certain right now. Variables such as more contagious COVID-19 strains, approval and availability of vaccines for children younger than 12, and local COVID-19 outbreaks could force schools back to online learning for weeks at a time.

We’ve seen the use of education technology become more prevalent this past year. We’ve also seen an additional disruption in education as COVID-19 impacted student achievement, particularly in diverse student populations with accessibility needs. Aside from the overarching challenges of learning from home, the nation’s nearly 7 million students with disabilities had additional obstacles to overcome during the pandemic. For these students, the move to Zoom wasn’t a fixall solution for remote learning.

Empower learners to make the most of their technology
Education Technology
With federal aid and other resources, local education authorities have found a way to provide most to all students with a device for school purposes. Some may claim that this is providing equitable access, yet there is more to achieving that goal than a device. The true magic begins when the learner and educator create a serendipitous relationship where devices are used as tools to empower the learning authentically.

Summer school is getting beefed up after remote learning; But some programs struggled to get teachers

Dan Gannon wouldn't mind a full summer break. The Bronx high school history teacher is as drained as anyone by teaching remotely during the pandemic.
He sympathizes with any educator taking the summer off. Many worked more hours than usual to adapt lessons and relearn how to instruct — and carried the weight of their students' struggles with pandemic stress and isolation.

Past is prologue: 12 big challenges from last school year that could now define the fall of 2021 — from learning loss to restoring trust, closing achievement gaps & more
The 74
If the 2019 school year ended in a surge of shutdowns and socially-distanced chaos, the 2020 school year commenced with an unprecedented mix of innovation, improvisation and isolation, as districts rushed to rethink everything from school safety to remote instruction, student nutrition, social-emotional supports and beyond. From fall to spring — through all the spikes in COVID cases, the rolling campus closures, the approval of vaccines for adolescents and the evolving CDC guidance surrounding the spread and mitigation of the disease — school communities did their best to pivot and adapt to the twists and turns that made the past nine months an academic year unlike any other.
