It is a fundamental fact of human existence: communicating with others while respecting differing views is a necessary life skill. By our basic nature, most people have difficulty handling emotionally charged conversations. Our capacity to manage emotions, resolve conflict, and create meaningful alignment with others is not innate — it must be learned. Few people have been trained to focus on emotional management skills, however, a lack of these coping abilities can lead to damaged relationships and career setbacks.

"We found the perfect strategy" ranks with "And they lived happily ever after" as a perpetual myth. A strategy is never excellent in and of itself; it is shaped, enhanced, or limited by implementation. Top leaders can provide the framework and tools for a team, but the game is won on the playing field. When a strategy looks brilliant, it's because of the quality of execution. A dumb idea is the one you fumble in the field by missing critical details, like how customers would react or what competitors might change while you're still picking up the ball.

The program, the researchers say, addresses the needs of less-experienced teachers who are challenged by teaching to the standards as well as becoming effective educators. MPR will also continue the study by looking at the effect that TPP has on student achievement. Those findings, expected in the summer of 2019, will help to address the question of whether professional development has an impact on student achievement.

Jennifer Abrams, a contributor for eSchool News, writes: "Moving from the classroom into the role of a teacher leader and a coach was a transition, to say the least. I recognized I was credentialed in teaching students English language arts, but didn’t have a credential in communicating effectively with adults. I took workshops and courses on facilitation and coaching, but the idea of being a professional in a learning community who was an effective group member as well as a leader continues to be something I am growing into everyday."

They call it the "Church Lane Hug." That is how educators at Church Lane Elementary Technology, a public school here, describe the protective two-armed way they teach students to carry their school-issued laptops. Administrators at Baltimore County Public Schools, the 25th-largest public school system in the United States, have embraced the laptops as well, as part of one of the nation’s most ambitious classroom technology makeovers. In 2014, the district committed more than $200 million for HP laptops, and it is spending millions of dollars on math, science and language software. Its vendors visit classrooms. Some schoolchildren have been featured in tech-company promotional videos.

For K–12 schools, the hallmark of success lies in their devotion to educating all students — no matter their background or ability. For students with a learning disability, even the simplest of classroom tasks can be a challenge without the proper scaffolding. The latest data, from the 2014-2015 school year, indicated that 6.6 million K-12 students received some kind of special education services. That was 13 percent of public school enrollment.

Recently submitted state plans for implementing the "Every Student Succeeds Act" provide insight into how research is making inroads into education policy at the state level. Based on my review of a sample of plans, a fair answer is that it is not. A previous post in this series by Martin West describes how ESSA created opportunities for states to use research and evidence in ways that improve student outcomes. Opportunities, yes — but most of what is in the plans could have been written fifteen years ago.

It's well known that teachers — even those who earn meager salaries — dig deep into their own pockets for supplies to do their jobs, with one study estimating they spend an average of nearly $500 a year on everything from pencils to batteries. For now, teachers can get a small tax break — deducting up to $250 from their taxes — for what they spend on supplies. But under the GOP tax reform bill, that deduction would go away for teachers and other categories of workers, including certain state and local officials and performing artists.

LeMya Vaughn, wearing a pink shirt, her hair braided neatly, sat in a large red armchair, her feet swinging far above the floor, practicing her reading skills. She leaned in toward her laptop and looked at a sentence that read, "Bake me a cake." The word "bake" was in red. The rest of the words were in white. "Click on a colored word," said a cheerful voice from the computer. LeMya's mother, Lakesha Vaughn, sat close by watching as her daughter considered which word to click on. "Find a word that has color," Vaughn reminded her gently. LeMya thought for a moment and moved the mouse to click on the word "bake."

On every school day in 2016, some 250 preschool children across the country were suspended or expelled for bad behavior, according to a new analysis of national data, and black children were more than twice as likely to be affected than other children. In total, about 50,000 preschoolers — kids who are 3 and 4 years old — were suspended from both public and private preschools at least once in 2016, and an additional 17,000 are estimated to have been expelled, according to findings from the nonprofit Center for American Progress.

Afterschool programs with positive, responsive and organized environments can have academic benefits for students, finds a new study by NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development. Young people growing up in urban, low-income communities spend significant time in publicly funded afterschool programs. Unlike schools, which grow increasingly segregated and involve more individual instruction as children grow older, afterschool programs are spaces where instructors, often similar to the students in age and background, can facilitate diverse, productive interactions that help youth reach social and academic goals.

School leaders see students' social and emotional development as important factors in school success but, in a nationally representative survey of principals, just 35 percent of respondents said their school was fully implementing a plan for incorporating social-emotional learning into policies and classroom work. Principals reported several barriers to putting social-emotional learning strategies into place, including a lack of time, inadequate teacher training and a need for further evidence of its link to academic success.
