A new survey of over 4,700 U.S. educators conducted by Scholastic provides a snapshot of equity — or lack thereof — in America's schools. For one, The Teacher and Principal School Report revealed that while 61 percent of teachers in low-poverty schools receive discretionary funds from their school, district or parent-teacher organization, only 46 percent of teachers in high-poverty schools receive the same. And while all teachers must reach into their own pockets to cover the costs of classroom supplies, teachers in high-poverty schools reported spending 40 percent more than teachers in other schools.

A group of education-related organizations are calling on school leaders and educators to respond to numerous reports of violence, harassment and intimidation that have occurred since the presidential election by publicly "reaffirm[ing] the inclusive values that are the foundation of healthy learning cultures." In the almost two weeks since Republican Donald Trump won a narrow electoral victory in the divisive race, schools around the country have reported hate speech, racist graffiti, and fear among immigrant and religious minority students who are troubled by Trump's tough talk on immigration.

After an election that's exposed deep racial and cultural divisions, teachers across the country are seeking constructive lessons for their students. Some educators have spent the past few days trying to soothe the anxieties of a student body that has now shifted to mostly nonwhite from white, given the president-elect's campaign promises to restrict Muslim immigration, build a wall between the U.S. and Mexico, and resurrect stop-and-frisk. Others are cheering the outcome with their students.

What would it take for “every child to succeed,” as our new federal education law, the Every Student Succeeds Act suggests? States can choose to use this major federal education legislation, which at its core is intended to address inequities in educational opportunities, to refocus on the early years — birth to third grade. State forerunners in addressing early learning in their draft ESSA consolidated state plans released for public comment are Illinois, North Carolina and Washington, and we know that early childhood leaders in several other states are working hard to develop early learning focused recommendations for their states' ESSA plans. We propose a bold challenge — what if every state submitted an ESSA state plan that prioritized resources and strategies on children preschool to third grade?

It's no secret that women, African Americans and Hispanics are underrepresented in computer science classrooms and careers. Among students who take AP Computer Science courses in high school, for example, boys outnumber girls by more than 4 to 1. In 2013, only eight percent of students taking the AP CS exam were Hispanic and just three percent were African American. A recent report from Google and Gallup on diversity gaps in computer science education pointed to "structural and social barriers" for these three populations.

As teachers, one of our most critical jobs is to create independent readers. Getting kids excited about books is the first and most crucial step on this journey. The more passionate students are about books, the more they read, and the more they read, the better they get. Making book commercials — or persuasive pieces to inspire their peers — is one great way to help students share their excitement about books with each other and create a community of passionate readers.

If today's educators continue to encourage the use of keyboards instead of digital ink and paper, they run the risk of being a "pager" teacher in a smart phone world, holding on to a past that has outlived its usefulness and limits students' cognitive potential ... at least, that's what human history and recent research is telling us.

There's a new catch phrase in town, and it has massive implications for blended and online learning, especially as OER use begins to ramp up in schools and institutions across the country. It's called OTT and yeah, you're going to need to know it. hat Is It? OTT stands for Over-The-Top technologies, or any technology that aids in the delivery of audio, video and media content via the internet, without requiring users to subscribe to ,or pay for, a traditional cable or satellite pay-TV service like a Comcast or Time Warner Cable.

Growing up in Columbia, Maryland, Hua-Yu Sebastian Cherng was a self-described troublemaker in grade school. He even got sent to the principal's office once for in-class misbehavior. But none of his teachers ever called his parents about his school misconduct. In fact, throughout his K-12 schooling, Cherng can't recall once when a school staffer reached out to his parents. Meanwhile, even though it was customary in high school for the counselor to personally congratulate parents of students who gained early admission to college, his name was left off the call list.

K-12 schools in the United States have failed to harness data to improve student performance and close achievement gaps, according to a new report from the Center for Data Innovation. The report, "Building a Data-Driven Education System in the United States," says that "Though some industries have completely restructured their operations around the new opportunities afforded by data-driven technologies, education has yet to undergo such a transformation to capitalize on the potential of data."

The concept of 1-to-1 computing (sometimes referred to as 1:1) has been around since the late 1990s. However, with the proliferation of inexpensive devices, as well as changes in education requirements and technological developments, the practice is gaining renewed momentum. With this fresh interest in 1-to-1 computing, it's important for educators to understand what the practice offers and why some are skeptical.

Natalie is a 15-year-old student in eighth grade. She was held back in fifth grade and possibly another time, but she is new to her school and the staff is unsure of her complete history. She generally attends her first two periods only three out of five days a week, and her absences are accumulating. Natalie rarely completes any work and is quiet and withdrawn. Most days she shuts out the world, putting her head on her desk, glancing at her phone, or scanning the hallway or classroom windows for any activity. Her mind always seems to be elsewhere.

Educators need specialized professional development to prevent the bullying of LGBTQ students, according to a recent report released by the Gay Lesbian Straight Education Network. The organization's latest report — "From Teasing to Torment: School Climate Revisited" — examines the prevalence of bullying and its various causes. GLSEN polled more than 1,360 middle and high school students, and 1,015 high school teachers. The study revealed 85 percent of teachers received PD to deal with bullying. However, just 33 percent received training in LGBTQ issues and only 24 percent in transgender issues. Those numbers leave LGBTQ students more vulnerable to victimization than are other students, the report states.

Are you ready for the next round of federal elections and their potential to change the course of education policy? Maybe not — but either way, let's take a look at the landscape. As many political handicappers have been pointing out for some time, the 2018 map for congressional elections looks very challenging for Democrats, particularly when it comes to the U.S. Senate. They must defend 25 seats in re-election bids, compared to just eight Republicans, who already have the majority in the chamber.

School voucher programs in the nation's capital and Vice President-elect Mike Pence's home state of Indiana could serve as a blueprint for a Trump administration plan to use public money to enable disadvantaged students to attend the public or private school of their choice. President-elect Donald Trump made clear that school choice would be an education priority. When Trump spoke at a Cleveland charter school in September, he pledged to funnel $20 billion in existing federal dollars into scholarships for low-income students. That idea would require approval from Congress, which last year passed a bipartisan overhaul of No Child Left Behind and is unlikely to alter it in the near future. Still, there are smaller-scale ways Trump could reshape public education.

California is once again setting new standards for language education reforms. On Nov. 8, 73 percent of the state's voters supported Proposition 58, a move that will allow public schools to develop their own bilingual and multilingual programs. Revisiting the restrictions on bilingual education that were placed nearly two decades ago, English-only instruction across the state will now be repealed. Proponents of bilingual education are thrilled.

Have you ever entered a space and immediately registered a feel for the room? I can still remember the classroom that intimidated me from the moment I walked in. I was in the eighth grade. I entered the room and quickly noticed the dim fluorescent lighting and the rows of seats. The room smelled as if I had just walked into my grandmother’s basement. The kicker was the teacher sitting in the front of the room reading the morning newspaper and motioning for us to do the assignment that was written on the chalkboard.
