5 ways SEL helped elevate our district from a predicted "F" to a solid "B"status
District Administration Magazine
Four years ago, our district was projected to perform at an “F” level based on its psychometric analysis at the time. Situated in a rural, agricultural region of Texas, we serve a diverse population of 500 students, many of whom are English language-learners (ELLs). About 90% of those students qualify for free or reduced lunch, and most of them — along with our teachers — deal with their own set of challenging life circumstances.

How district leaders can seize an opportunity emerging from volatile school board races
District Administration Magazine
The challenges created by this fall's contentious school board elections also offer superintendents and their teams a chance to bridge some political divides, one expert says.
Even though one recent survey shows most Americans approve of how schools have performed since the COVID pandemic began, school board candidates in some districts won seats by capitalizing on anger over critical race theory and mask and vaccine mandates.

Schools add wellness days to support mental health and block burnout
District Administration Magazine
Teachers in Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools were recently asked what administrators could do to reduce spiking stress levels without taking the focus off student-centered instruction.
The North Carolina district is grappling with a challenge that’s disrupted schools across the country. Because substitutes are scarce, much of teachers’ time for planning is being swallowed up by having to cover for colleagues absent due to COVID infections or quarantines.

What will it take to protect schools' digital landscape?
eSchool News
The shift to remote learning last year is partly to blame for this rise in attacks, as teachers and students relied on technology to deliver lessons, complete homework, and interact with students. When attackers target schools, learning is often disrupted, sometimes for days, as critical systems are taken offline.
The problem is significant enough that President Joe Biden signed into law the K-12 Cybersecurity Act, strengthening federal efforts to examine the cyber risks facing these institutions. And just what are those risks — and what needs to happen next?

Incorporating infographics in world language classes
Edutopia
While we always strive to get our students reading in the target language, we sometimes forget that there are various options besides lengthy texts. Infographics offer bite-sized pieces of information with visual supports in place.
Unlike stories or articles, an infographic typically breaks up bits of information and includes titles, keywords, and images. This is especially useful for novice language learners.

Building the 'why' into a districtwide literacy implementation
eSchool News
To offer students explicit and systematic phonics instruction and practice — and to ensure the approach and language we used to deliver it was consistent across grade levels and schools — we implemented Reading Horizons Discovery in kindergarten through second grade in 2017; many third grade classrooms opted to implement the program as well. Since the original roll-out of the program, much research in the science of reading has confirmed that this program aligns to best practices in phonics instruction.

New Mexico sees TV tech as one fix to K-12 internet divide
Associated Press
Internet problems continue to slow down many students in the U.S. state of New Mexico, but a pilot project using TV signals to transmit computer files may help.
State public education officials distributed devices to eight families in the city of Taos that allow schools to send them digital files via television. The boxes the size of a deck of cards allow digital television receivers to connect with computers using technology called datacasting.
