Fairs have been a part of the culture of communities for many years – showcasing the very best of agriculture, industry and people. Farms shift sales strategies during pandemic
Lancaster Farming
It's tough operating as a farm that sells directly to the public, especially during a pandemic.
Even though farms are considered essential businesses and more types of businesses are opening to the public, that doesn't mean that all customers will feel comfortable making purchases this way.
Farms that host big events — especially those that center on a perishable crop — may need to cancel or get creative with how they can still host their event.

Agritourism farms offer new options, prepare for future, California Farm Bureau federation reports
Sierra Sun Times
As more businesses shut down by COVID-19 move to reopen with new protocols, farms that rely on agricultural tourism as a core business try to find their footing after having to cancel events and other on-farm activities. Many of the state's agritourism operations are refocusing their marketing strategy by selling crops directly to customers, including through online sales, community-supported agriculture subscription boxes, and pick-up and delivery services, said Penny Leff, University of California, Davis, agritourism coordinator.

Lake Erie North Shore wineries finding new ways to attract customers as tourism is down
CBC News
May to October is normally the busiest time for tourism in Windsor-Essex, Ontario, Canada. Now, with the American border closed to non-essential travel and many Ontarians remaining closer to home, local wineries have had to come up with inventive ways to attract customers.
At Colchester Ridge Estate Winery (CREW) customers are only allowed in the front foyer to order wine and there are no wine tastings allowed — so general manager Michelle Turnbull started doing virtual wine tastings.

Long Island, New York, wineries and farms gear up for Phase 2 reopening
Newsday
Most Long Island, New York, farms have operated and even prospered during the coronavirus pandemic as the demand for their fresh fruits and vegetables has increased, experts say, but wineries with state-shuttered tasting rooms haven't shared in the prosperity.
The lockout at wineries is set to change this week as Long Island prepares to enter Phase Two of reopening, allowing restaurants and bars to operate with outdoor seating.

How farmers got Florida to 'swipe ripe'
The New York Times
As chickens pecked the ground around me, a young woman in a face mask signaled that it was my turn. I walked up to the farm stand and added tomatillos, lentils, fresh herbs, lettuce, avocados, eggs and even toilet paper to my basket. Everything was cheaper than it would have been at a grocery store in Miami, about a half-hour away, where items were sparse and the aisles were crowded.
